Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEC CHARLES A. EMERY, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CLUTCH OR ROPE-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,990, dated September 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. EMERY, of Springield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Device for Fastening Ropes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view. Fig. 2 is an edge view with the rope removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
A is a base-piece, formed of any suitable material and shape, with a projecting jaw, B.
C is an arm hinged to the base-piece A by the pin D, in such a manner that the projectingjaw E on the arm can be brought opposite to the jaw B and clasp the rope F when placed between them.
The methodof using the device is thus: The device having been securely fastened by screws or otherwise in the place it is to be used, the rope F, with the fast end at G, is passed around the curved side of the jaw E, which is grooved to receive it, and then between the jaws E and B, the loose end being at H. The strain of the rope being in the direction of G, the arm C is movedon its hinge toward thejawB and firmly secures the rope from moving further. The greater the strain on the rope the more secure will it be held.
The jaws may be roughened or notched to lit the inequalities of the rope.
To unfasten the rope, I pull the loose end H in the direction of 1 on Fig. 3 from between the jaws.
By this method a rope or cord can be secured much easier-'and quicker than by the usual method of tying, and can be almost instantly uniastened.
I claim- The device constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and explained, and for the purpose specified.
' C. A. EMERY.
