UETTEE STETEE PATENT @EETEE.
JOHN ROWE DEAN, OF PURLEY, TEXAS.
COMBINATION HEEL-SWEEP PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,462., dated February 28, 1893. Application filed November 3, 1892. Serial No. 450,560. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROWE DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Purley, in the county of Franklin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Heel Sweep Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention relates to improvements in plows, and its object is to provide an arrangement of parts which may be so combined as to form, as desired, either first a whole heel sweep, or a right or left half heel sweep, second a Whole solid sweep, or a right or left half solid sweep, third a right and left turn plow, or a right or left half turn plow.
My invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of the plow foot with the center attachment thereto, to which the other parts are secured to form the different kinds of plow or cultivator above noted. Fig. II is a perspective view of the same from another direction, with the wing attached thereto to form a heel sweep. Fig. III is a view of the same, shown ready to attach the mold -board. Fig. IV
shows the parts combined to form a solid sweep, Fig. V the same to form a turn-plow. Figs. VI, VII, and VIII are rear views of various combinations which maybe formed, and Fig. IX is a side view showing the manner of attaching the land-side.
l is the plow foot to which are secured by means of a bolt 2 and nut 3 the toe or shovel 4, and the center attachment, by means of which the various parts are secured to the plow foot. This attachment is either double, as shown at 5, Figs. I and VIII, or single, as shown at 6, Figs. VI and VII. In both forms, it consists of a metallic block of which the lower part fits snugly against the rear side of the plow foot, while the upper part is cut away on its front face leaving a space between it and the foot. The block has either one or two extensions 7 upon which are secured the wings 8 by means of the bolt 9 passing through said wing and through the slot 10 in the extension and secured by the nut 11. In this manner the relative position of the wing with regard to the foot may be adjusted. The upper edge of the wing abuts against the rib 12 maintaining the wing in its proper direction. Thus a right or left heel sweep is formed, or, if desired, both wings may be secured in place, forming a whole heel sweep.
For the purpose of securing in its place the mold-board, the plate 13 is first secured to the block 5 or 6. This plate is triangular in shape having at two of its corners extensions 14 which are turned over and fit, one against the upper front face of the block, being secured thereto by bolt 15 and nut 16, and the other is secured to the extension 7 by the bolt 17 and nut 18. To the plate 13 may be attached, by means of a bolt 19 passing through the slot 20 in the plate, nut 21, and washer 22, either the sweep 23, or the mold-board 24, forming a solid sweep in the first case, and a turn over plow in the second.
It will be understood that when it is desired to use both right and left sweeps or mold-boards, the double form of block shown in Figs. I and VIII is attached to the plow foot; when only one side is used, the form shown in Figs. VI and VII is attached. In either case it may be desirable to attach a land-side to keep the plow straight. For this purpose an adjustable holder is used, having an arm 26 slotted as at 27 and secured against the rear face of the block by means of the nut 28, washer 29, and bolt 30, which bolt passes through the slot 27 in the arm and the slot 31 in the block, thus permitting both upward and lateral adjustment, relatively to the plow foot, of the holder 25 and the landslide 32 secured to it. In order to render said holder immovable in its position against the block, the rear face of the block is corrugated as shown at 33. The other arm 34 of the holder is perforated to receive a bolt 35 which has a squared head fitting snugly within the recessed groove or channel 37 of the landslide, said bolt having between the bolt-head and the arm 34, a washer 38, part of which is cut away to enter the recess in the land-side, the part between the land-side and arm being of circular periphery.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a plow foot and a block secured thereto, said block being cut away on its front face, and corrugated on its rear face and provided with a central slot longitudinal thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a land-side, a holder therefor, provided with a terminal bolt-hole, said land-side having a recessed groove therein, a square-headed bolt slidingin said groove, and a nut for securing said bolt in position, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a land-side, a holder therefor, provided with a terminal bolt-hole, said land-side having a recessed groove there in, a square-headed bolt slidingin said groove, a nut for securing said bolt in position, and a disk or washer having a cut away part'to enter said recess, substantially as described.
4:. The combination, with a plow frame, of a block secured thereto, said block having a side extension, provided with a longitudinal slot and a rib parallel with said slot, and a sweep adapted to be secured to said extension and rest upon the rib, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with a plow frame, and shovel, of a block having an extension, a sweep attached to the extension, a plate connecting the block proper and extension, and a mold board attached to said plate, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination, with a plow frame, of ablock secured thereto slot-ted longitudinally, of a right angled land-side holder adj ustably connected to the rear side of the block, said holder being vertically and laterally adjustable, and a land-side attached to the lower end of the holder, and adjustable thereon, substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination, with a plow frame, of a block secured theretoand provided with an extension having a longitudinal slot and parallel rib, a sweep attached to said extension, and a plate connecting the block proper and. extension, said plate being adapted to havea sweep or mold board attached thereto, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ROWVE DEAN.
