APPARATUS FOR HOLDING CHECKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,441, dated February 28, 1893. Application tiled June 6, 1892. Serial No. 435,643. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. SOUTHWICK, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding Checks, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a ease provided with my improved sales checks in position for use; Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same on line, .'r, in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a horizontal section on line, y, y, in Fig. 1; Fig. 4t a horizontal section with the locking bar removed, the drawer being represented as open; Fig. 5 a plan View of one of the locking bars; Fig. 6 a cross-section of the same.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to an apparatus for holding checks, it being especially applicable for use in restaurants and similar places where checkers waiters and cashiers are employed; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents a case which is provided with a series of horizontally arranged shelves, b, arranged vertically above each other, the spaces between said shelves being divided by a series of partitions, CZ, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the bottom of the case a drawer, f, is mounted and a slot, g, leads through the case bottom proper, h, into said drawer. To each shelf a series of wires, z', are pivoted by an end, said wires being arranged so that when unlocked they will fall outward and rest on a bead,j, at the outer edge of the shelves as best represented at, 7c, in Fig. 2. One of these wires,t', is disposed in each compartment formed by the partitions, d. Each shelf, Z), has in its outer edge a series of slots, m, into which the upper ends of the wires on the next succeeding lower shelf may pass. The locking bar, B, is adapted to cover these slots and is provided at one end with two brads or pins, p, which may be inserted in openings, q, (see Fig. 4) on one of the side-pieces, r, of the case. The opposite side-piece, t, is hinged at, e, swing outward, as shown in Fig. 4, and is provided with an opening, w, to receive a pin, z, on the Opposite end of the locking bar. A lock, 15, secures said side-piece to one of the shelves, b, as shown in Fig. 1. On the under side of the locking bar, b, there is a longitudinally arranged groove, 16, (see Fig. 6) which will receive the free ends of the wires, i, holding said wires in position, as shown in Fig. 2. On the outer edge of the locking bars there is a downwardly projecting lip, 17, which serves to conceal the slots, m.
Checks of like amounts are numbered consecutively and are mounted on a wire, z', in proper order, said wires beingV seem-,ed by the lock-bars in manner described. Jilin this position the pile of checks on each wire are arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Each compartment between the partitions, d, contains checks of like amount and the amounts being arranged consecutively from checks of iive cents upward as shown. The checks thus locked in the case cannot be removed without tearing the stub from the wires.
If desired a weight or ball, 55, (see Figs. 1 and 2) may be strung on the wires, z', above the pile of checks to hold them in position.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. The ease, A, provided with the slotted shelves b, a receptacle in its base and a slot opening in said receptacle in combination with the wires fi, pivoted to said shelves, the lockbars, B, for receiving the free ends of said wires, the hinged side-piece t, and lock for securing said bars, substantially as described.
2. In a sales check apparatus, the combination of the case provided with shelves, partitions on said shelves, slots in the outer edges of the shelves, wires pivoted on the shelves, the free ends of said wires projecting into the slots of the shelf above, and L-shaped locking bars adapted to lock the wires on the shelves, said bars covering the outer edges of the shelves and the slots in the same.
3. In a sales check apparatus, the combina- (see Fig. 3) to IOO tion of the ease provided with shelves, partitions on said shelves, slots in the outer edges of the shelves, Wires pivoted on the shelves, the free ends of said Wires projecting into the slots of the shelf above, and L-shaped bars adapted to lock the Wires on the shelves, said bars covering the outer edges of the shelves and the slots in the sanne, and said bars being provided with pins on the ends fitting into slots in the sides of the easing.
4. In a sales check apparatus, the combination 0f the case provided with shelves having beads at or near the middle thereof, slots in the outer edges of the shelves, Wires pivoted on the shelves, the free ends of said Wires projecting into the slots of the shelf above, and L-shaped bars for locking the Wires in position, said wires being adapted to rest on the beads when unlocked.
c 5. In a sales check apparatus, the combination of the case, one side of Which is hinged, shelves on said case, Wires pivoted on said shelves, slots in the outer edges of the shelves into which the free ends of the Wires project, L-shaped locking bars provided with slots adapted to cover the free ends of the wires, the vertical portion of said bars covering the outer edge of the shelves, and pins on the ends of said locking bars adapted to rest in slots in the sides of said easing.
