SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,055, dated February 21, 1893.

This invention relates to improvements on the undergarments that are described in Let- .ters Patent No. 243,498 of June 28, 1881, and

No. 378,465, of February 28, 1888.

The object of the invention is to render garments that are constructed in accordance recited Letters Patent more durable and to overcome any weak spots that might be found in the ordinaryconst-ruction of that class of garments.

The invention consists in the features of structure that are hereinafter more fully described. i

In the drawings, Vwhich illustrate a pair of drawers, the letter A represents the body of the garment, made of suitable fabric, which for the purposes of this description I may term inelastic fabric, and B B are the elastic insertions. These insertions were heretofore joined to the body by a row or rows of stitching at the edge or point of junction; but, according to the present invention, I cause the elastic portion to overlap the inelastic portions near it (see Fig. 4,) and I join the two parts A and B together by rows ct of stitches that are near the edge of the inelastic portion A, and by additional rows b of stitches that are near the edge of the elastic portion B. The edges of the inelastic portionA are turned under as shown at c Fig. v4 toward fabric B, and in like manner the edges of the elasticv portion B are turned toward fabric A as shown at d Fig. 4 to give v increased strength and avoid having raw edges and unraveling. Thus between the stitches o, and b the fabrics A B are double, covering one another, while at the lines a and b of the stitching there are three thicknesses of fabric, as shown in Fig. 4. By this means greater durability in the garment is produced and the elastic portion allowed more extensibilityI than if it were held only by stitches in itsv edge as heretofore.

The improvement referred to is applicable to all the elastic insertions in undergarments of the character to which this invention relates.

At the crotch of the drawers the rear most elastic insert-ion B, which is shown in full face view in Fig. 1 and at the lower end is shown turned up in Fig. .2, overlaps a horizontal elastic insertion B2` (see Fig. 2) which comes up from the leg portions of the drawers, as in Fig. 1, and is joined to said horizontal portion by appropriate stitches; but on the outer side of the garment, that part thereof in which the insertion B overlaps the insertion B2 is further covered by an inelastic divided strip A2, so that at the place where the garment is weakest otherwise, it has, according to this construction, three thicknesses, A2 Band B, thereby producing great strength and durability and avoiding objectionable elasticity at this place.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, an undergarment composed of inelastic body portion A and elastic insertion B, the elastic and inelastic portions being turned at their edges to form four hems, and united by the four rows of stitches o; and b, passing through said hems and through said fabric, the said fabrics A and B overlapping between the rowsa and b of stitches, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described. l

2. As a new article of manufacture an nndergarment having the upright inner elastic insertion B, the horizontal elastic insertion B2 and the upright outer inelastic divided strip A?, said parts A2 B and B2 overlapping each other at the crotch and adapted to render the overlapped portion inelastic, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and de-l Witnesses:
