COMBINED THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER. No, 49u62. Patented Feb. 7, 189s'.

COMElNED THRED HDLDR AND CUTTR.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,262, dated February "Y, i893.
Application led March 3, 1892. Serial No. 423,564, (No model.)
To all wiz/ont if; may concern.:
Be it known that l, EBENEZER CUR'HS JEN- KiNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shrewsbury, in the county of iVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a nenT and useful improvement in Thread Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a speciiicaticn.
'The aim of this invent-ion is to produce a device for holding the end of a thread on a spool, which shall he very cheap and siniple and very efiicient for the purpose intended, and which device may also carry a cutter for the thread.
To this end the invention consists of the device described and claimed in this specilication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
'Figure l is a side elevation of a spool with rny device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. l, and Fig. e is a viexv of the device separate from the spool and partially closed up.
My device consists of the combined thread holder and cutter herein described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings and in detail, S represents a spool of thread and W my iinproved device. The saine is preferably made of a piece of coiled fiat spring Wire such as watch spring Wire so that the normal tendency of the saine is to close up, or normally contract to a diameter smaller than the core of the spool to which the saine is to he applied, whereby the same will tightly tit on the thread on the spool and Will clasp the next unvvound convolution of thread. On one end of the spring are 'formed or fastened ears l, l and the saine are bent over as shown to loosely clasp the body portion of the spring. The other end oi the spring is bent out as at 3 and the saine has two notches as il, -l out in the saine, which act as cutters for the thread. A hole 5 is drilled through the central portion of the spring through which the end of the thread may he passed.
The operation is as follows-The thread is passed through the hole 5 as before described,
and the device is then snapped onto the spool. The spool is now held in the hand or lingers so that it may easily revolve and the thread is pulled. The spool will revolve as the thread is unvvound but the device will not revolve but will move up and down on the spool and follow the next umvound convolution of un- Wound thread. After a sufficient quantity of the thread has been unwound, the saine is pulled into either one of the critters 4: and cut off. rihis will leave a small portion or end hanging out of the hole 5, so that the saine may loe easily grasped for the next operation. As the device necessarily follows the next unm wound convolution of thread and is always over and clasps and surrounds the saine at all times, and as the normal tendency of the spring is to contract to a circle smaller than the thread on the spool, the end of the thread will he tightly held and kept from unvvinding.
Thus my device forlns avery simple thread holder and cutter.
rlhe device herein shown and described may be varied hya skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of my invention, as expressed in the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is"
l. The thread holder consisting of a spring band bent upon itself and having ears upon one end thereof, a cutter formed on the other end thereof, and a hole drilled through the body portion of the spring band, substantially as described.
2. The thread holder consisting of a spring band adapted to clasp an unwound convolution of thread, and having one of its ends providedfivith an outward projection, said projection having cutters formed therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set niy hand in the presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
EBENEZER CURTiS JENKINS.
