A. LEVY.v --WAISTBAND PoR TRoUSBRs.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM LEVY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO OOLBY t OO., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WAISTBAND FOR TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,446, dated January 24, 1893.
Application iiled .Tuly 27, 1892. Serial No. 441,429. (Model.) Y
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM LEVY, a citi, zen of the United States, residing in the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yielding Waistbands for Trousers, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to yielding waistbands for youths trousers and similar garments, in which the attaching band is connected to the trousers or garments by pieces of elastic fabric fastened to the attaching band in line with the button-holes or devices by which the waistband is attached to the shirt-waist or other supporting garment. The elastic pieces heretofore generally used in this connection have been of plain elastic webbing, the elastic filling of which was cut and otherwise injured by the button-hole stitching utilized to fasten'the webbing to the attaching band and the cutting of the button-hole, and the expansion of which pieces had to be limited by'independent inelastic plies or stays to save injury from excessive strain.
In my improvement, I combine with the attaching band, as above, tension pieces of elastic fabric, a portion of each of which pieces in line with the attaching button-hole or device is frilled and unprovided with elastic material, and I extend the band-fastening stitching through said frilled, inelastic portion, so that the elastic portion ofthe tension piece will be uninjured, while the frilled portion will serve itself as an extensible stay to limit the stretch of the tension piece. I usually place the frilled inelastic portion of each tension piece over a part of the button-hole, stitch the frilled portion to the band by the button-hole stitching, and cut the button-hole through the band and the frilled portion, on an ordinary button-hole sewing machine, with great ease and facility and without affecting the elastic portion of the piece.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I shall describe more in detail the mode in which I practice the invention and then distinctly claim the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an interior view of a yielding waistband embodying my invention, applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
Like letters of reference designate 'corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a pair of trousers to which my waistband is applied.
The two-ply attaching band B is preferably made, and provided with button-holes O, and at the foot of the button-holes O, longitudinal slits D cut in the inner ply of the band B, to receive between the plies the elastic tension-pieces E in line with the button-holes, substantially as described in the patent to Birnbaum, dated June 29, 1886, No. 344,341. The middle portion F, of the tension piece E, in line with the button-hole C is unprovided with elastic material and is frilled as shown, so that, the frilled portion being co-incident with the button-hole O, the same is stitched through both plies of the band B and the interposed frilled portion F, and the buttonhole out, as by means of an ordinary buttonhole machine, thereby simultaneously stitching and fastening the frilled portion F to the band B at the end and edges of the buttonhole. The elastic-web portion of each piece E will thus be uninjured by the button-hole stitching G and the cutting of the buttonhole, While the frilled medial portion F, together with the edge portions H, which may be also frilled as shown,-will serve as simple and effectual 'extensible stays to expand with the elastic portions, while preventing undue stretching.
In addition to the self-staying pieces E, a folded ply K, as described in the aforesaid patent to Birnbaum, may, if desired, be used to gain additional strength, being stitched or otherwise secured, together with the lower ends of the pieces E, to the trousers A.
The waistband for trousers, herein deseribed, cornposed of a strip of cloth to which are secured elastic straps, the medial material of which is frlled and inelastic, and but- 5 ton-holes out and stitched through the cloth and said frilled inelastic material of the straps, for the purpose set forth,l
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ABRAHAM LEVY.
In presence of- GAIL W. STEVENS, EDWIN F. NAULTY.
