H. GOB'SEL WINDOW,FRAME.
No. 49 ,108. Patented Jan. 17', 1893.
PATENT FFICE.
HERMANN GOESE, OF MILWAUKEE, l/VISCONSIN.
WINDOW-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,108, dated January 17, 1893.
l v Application filed August 22, 1892. Serial No. 443.701. (No model.)
To a/Z whom t may oon-cern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN GoesE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to improve the mechanism set forth in my patent No. Ll='72,757, issued April l2, 1892; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l represents an elevation of a portion of a window-frame embodying my invention, Figs. 2, 3, 4c and 5 sections respectively taken on lines 2-2, 3 3, #L -+L and -5 of the preceding ligure, and Fig. 6, a detail rear elevation illustrating a brace-mechanism that constitutes part of the present invention.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a pulley-piece of a window-frame provided with an opening that is normally closed b v a retractible and removable section B, similar to the one set forth in my prior patent. The pulley-piece is also provided with a parting rail C and guide-rails D, the pulley-piece section B and a portion of the parting-rail integral therewith (or fast thereon) being of a length equal to or greater than that of a sash, not shown. In my prior patent the retractible and removable section B of the pulley-piece was shown as being made flush with that portion of the parting-rail C thereon, but I now make a rabbet b at the parting-rail edge of said section, as clearly illustrated in Figs. l and 5.
Like in my former patent, castings H, I, titted to the stationary portion of the pulleypiece, engage with other castings on the removable section of said pulley-piece, but I have not considered it necessary to illustrate the latter castings, or to show the ones H, I, in detail further than is essential to my present improvements.
As set forth in said former patent, a latchmechanism, operates to hold the pulley-piece sect-ion I3 in either a normal or retracted position, but I have not considered it necessary to illustrate any more than the finger-piece c of the latch-mechanism engaged with a guide (l in said pulley-piece section, inasmuch as the details of said latch-mechanism are no part ofthe present invention.
As shown in Figs. l and 2,I prefer to form the lower casting I with an extension C' ot' the parting-rail C, this being a matter of advantage and convenience in the carrying out of my invention, but not absolutely necessary, as a wooden portion of said partingrail may overlie said casting, as is shown in connection with the upper casting. r In order to secure accuracy of fit and set.- ting of the castings H, I, it has been found desirable to connect the same by means of a metallic bar J, bolted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto, this bar being preferably of right-angle form, or what is generallytermed T iron, and bolted at its ends to longitudinally inwardly extended dan ges f on said castings, as best illustrated in Fig. e.
In practice the connecting bar J, between the castings H, I, is fitted in the pulley piece so as to have its face flush therewith, and the inner angle of this connecting bar also forms a rabbet g 'for engagement with the one b pertaining to the pulley-piece section B, whereby I am enabled to leave enough space in the latter rabbet to compensate for possible swelling of the Wood and avoid binding, while at the same time the engaging rabbets are a cut-off for outside air.
I prefer to provide the inwardly extending portion of the angular connecting bar .I with an inclined notch h for engagement with a lug 'i forming part of a plate K fast on the rear side of the pulley-piece section B, as best illustrated in Fig. 6, this construction and engagement of parts operating to brace said pulleypiece section against any tendency to warp.
The general operation of the pulley-piece section is the same as that set forth in my prior patent, and to facilitate handling of the same it may be provided with one or more finger-sockets j on its outer side.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a window-frame pulley-piece having an opening and closure therefor provided IOO with engaging castings, a bar uniting those of the castings that are fitted to the pulley-piece substantially as set forth.
2. ln a Window-frame pulley-piece having an opening and a retraetible removable closure for the same provided with engaging castings, a bar uniting those of the castings that are fitted to the pulley-piece, substantially as set forth.
3. In a Window-frame pulley-piece having an opening and closure therefor provided with engaging castings, an angle-bar joining those of the castings that are itted to the pulley-piece, the inwardly extended portion of the bar provided with au inclined notch, and a lug on said closure that engages the notch, Substantially as set forth.
4. A Window-frame pulley-piece provided with an opening,a retraetible removable rabbeted closure for the opening having a portion of a parting-rail thereon adjacent to the rabbet, and an angle-bar fitted to said pulleypiece, this angle-bar constituting a rabbet for the reception of the one pertaining to said closure, substantially as set forth.
5. In a window-frame pulley-piece having an opening and closure therefor provided with engaging Castings, a portion of a parting-rail on the Closure, and a continuation of the parting-rail forming part of one of the castings fitted to the pulley-piece, substantially as set forth'.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
