Description

(No Model.)
J. E. CHAPMAN. BORDER. FOR WALKS, &c.
No. 489,792. Patented Jan. 10, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. CHAPMAN, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFORNIA.
BORDER FOR WALKS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,792, dated January 10, 1893.
Application filed April 25, 1892- Serial No. 430,623. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs E. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San J os, Santa Clara county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Borders and Conducting-Bases; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device which I call a border curb and base. Its object is to provide a permanent curb or border for garden or other walks or paths, and to surround beds or inclosures of any description.
It consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of a section of my curb and base.
The object of my invention is to provide a permanent curb or border having a horizontal base extending outwardly from the path or walk, of which it forms the border, and the sections of which it is made are corrugated so as to divert irrigation water outwardly from the path and directly into the beds where it is to be used.
A is the vertical and B the horizontal portion of a section of my curb and base, thetwo uniting at approximately a right angle at their junction. The vertical portion is preferably about four inches in depth, and the horizontal portion about eight inches in width. Both of the inner and outer surfaces are corrugated or channeled, as shown, for the purpose of giving greater strength and lightness to the sections, and also to serve on the inner and horizontal portion as channels or guides by which the water of irrigation or other water falling at this point, will be conducted away from the vertical portion, and discharged into the soil at some distance from it. The inner angle, Where the parts A and B meet, is preferably curved, as shown at O, to give additional strength to the angle, and the inner surface of the horizontal portion B is slightly inclined outwardly to insure the water flowing away upon it. These sections may be made of any suitable or desired material, preferably of some form of clay or terra cotta baked in the usual manner. They may be made straight, curved outwardly or inwardly, and also in sections forming a right angle to be used at corners. They may be designed for paths orwalks for flower beds, orotherinclosures, and they form a permanent and easily placed border, the base forming a sufficient support to insure the border portion, always standing in a vertical position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, border tiles consisting of vertical curb sections with exterior and interior vertical corrugations and a base, the bottom of which extends outwardly at right angles with the vertical portion, the upper surface meeting the outer vertical face at an angle greater than a right angle, and having corrugations formed therein in continuation with the corrugations in the exterior face of the vertical portion, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
