Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,972, dated July 525, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, E.,A. MORE, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new protecting-cap for oilcans for protecting the corks in oil-cans from injury or displacement during the process ot' transportation 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the annexed drawings is an elevation, in perspective, ot' one ofthe improved raps, showing the front or open portion of the same. Fig. 2 is a similar representation of the back side ofthe cap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the center ot' the cap.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved cap, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
It is understood that cans, usually of tin, and surrounded by wooden boxes, are used as packages for shipping oils. The nozzles of the cans ordinarily project through an aperture made inthe surrounding case, so that the can may be emptied without destroying the packing-case and returned to the place where it was previously filled for another load. During` thc transit ot' the cans from place to place the nozzles of them Iare stopped with a cork; and the object of the present invention is to secure these corks and projecting nozzles from destruction, either accidental or malicious.' For this purpose I employ the cast metallic cap A, the general form otl which is a hollow frustum of a cone, one side of which is leftl open, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. There are two lugs, a a, projecting from the outside of the cap at the base ot' the cone and on opposite sides ot' it, which are perforated with the holes b b, through which common wood-screws may be passed for the purpose of securing it to the wooden packing-case. The size of the cap A should be such that it will fit closely over the cork, to which it may be applied, and which it will completely envelop with the exception of the open side of the cone, which opening should he just sufficiently large for the cork to pass freely through it, so that when the cap is applied to a case for which it is intended, and it becomes necessary to remove it, it will only be necessary to draw out one of the wood-screws, when the cap can be turned around on the other screw as itwere on a hinge, and the cork can then be withdrawn. When the can is refilled and the cork replaced the cap can be returned to its original place and the withdrawn screw re-inserted.
