CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,626, dated January 10, 1893 Application filed April 29, 1892- Serial No. 431,104. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ESTHER CARPENTER, of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke, in the State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved cuffholder which shall firmly hold the cuff in any desired position, which may be easily operated by the wearer and which will be simple and neat in appearance.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a back view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section taken from front to back, and Fig. 3 is a view showing its position when in use.
A suitable button A is provided with a spring clasp a mounted in its back in position to grasp the rear end of a cuff and hold the same firmly against the button when it is in its closed position. A fixed jaw B is se cured to the back of the button A in swinging adjustment by means of laterally extended lugs 19 which engage ears a on the button. Serrations are formed along one edge of the fixed jaw B from its free end rearwardly. A movable jaw C is pivoted at c to the fixed jaw B. A lug 0' for opening and closing the movable jaw is formed thereon preferably by being struck up therefrom. The movable jaw is provided with a serrated face adapted to engage with the serrated face on the fixed jaw when the movable jaw is closed. Anose or projection 0 having oblique faces projects from a part of the movable jaw 0 whose edge is substantially concentric with the pivot c. A spring D secured to the fixed jaw B is provided with a head d having oblique faces which correspond with the faces upon the nose 0 This spring D exerts its pressure upon the edge of the movable jaw C and when the head d engages the front face of the nose 0*, the movable jaw is yieldingly held closed, and when the head engages the back face of the nose, the movable jaw is yieldingly held open.
The jaws B and .O are slightly bowed at their serrated ends to enable a better grasp upon the portion of the clothing to which the cuif is to be attached.
My cuff holder is operated as follows: The back edge of the cuff is secured between the spring clasp a and the button A. The movable jaw O is opened and the holder and cuff are then inserted into the sleeve as far as desired and then the lining of the coat sleeve or if desired the shirt sleeve is engaged between the jaws B and O, as the jaw C is closed. This jaw is closed by means of the lug c and as the lug c is moved down the nose 0 forces the spring D upward and after the nose has passed the spring comes back to its normal position and the head d of the spring engages the front inclined or oblique face of the nose. The cuff is thus held firmly in its desired adj ustment in relation to the sleeve and will not be released until the jaw O is positively opened. After the movable jaw O is opened it is held yieldingly so, and thus does away with the necessity of the person holding it open.
