SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,403, dated January 3, 1893.

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. YARNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Senecaville, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waste-Spout Attachments for Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for pumps, and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to any of the various styles of pumps, and which will serve to catch the drippings from the pump spout and convey the same back into the well, thus effectually preventing the annoyance occasioned by the water running over the platform or accumulating in pools upon the surface, as is frequently the case, especially where the pump is in frequent use.

My device is adapted to be hinged to the pump stock in such a manner as to permit of its being thrown automatically into operative position. by gravity, when the vessel filled has been removed from beneath the pump spout, and to be readily moved back out of the way, when the vessel is placed beneath the spout.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction, and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pump provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a similar view, in which the attachment is shown as thrown back by the pail placed beneath the pump spout.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a pump of ordinary construction, provided with the usual operating handle B, and spout O. The front face of the pump stock is provided with a groove D, which extends from a point slightly above the platform of the well downward, and pivoted or hinged to the face of the stock, at the upper end of this groove, is the lower end of the spout or trough F. This trough is preferably wider at its upper than at its lower end, and at its upper end is provided with a heavy metallic wire or rod G, the ends of which extend for a short distance 6 beyond the side edges of the trough, and are formed with loops G within which loops are secured the ends of the chains H, the opposite ends of which chains are attached to the body of the pump; the chains being of such length as to permit the trough G to fall outward for a suificient distance to catch the drippings from the pump spout.

It will be readily seen that by this construction, the spout or trough F will normally occupy a position beneath the pump spout, and will serve to catch and convey drippings therefrom back into the well, and it will also be seen that it will offer no resistance to the pail or other vessel which may be placed beneath the spout.

While I have shown a particular form of spout or trough, and prefer this construction, still, it is at once evident that both the form of the trough, and the mode of attachment of the same to the pump, may be varied, without departing from the spirit of my invention; which contemplates the use of a hinged waste spout beneath the spout of the pump.

Having thus described my invention, what 0 I claim to be newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;

The combination with apu mp and its spout, of a waste trough hinged at one end to the pump, the throw of the upper end being lim- 5 ited by chain fastenings to the pump and adapted to be automatically thrown into and out of operative position by the placing or removing of a pail or other vessel beneath the pump-spout, and serving to convey the drip- 10o pings from the spout back into the well, substantially as shown and described.
