SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,293, dated January 3, 1893.
Application filed August 3, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL WILHELM J OHANN HEINRICH DWENGER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the-invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ash sitters whereby unconsumed and partly burned coal may be separated from the ashes in a rapid and eficient manner, without the liability of the dust and ashes escaping and soiling surrounding objects.
The object of the invention is to provide an ash sifter which shall be simple and economical to manufacture and efficient in operation, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of an ash sifter constructed in accordance with myinvention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates a rectangular box, comprising the front and rear walls, 2, 2, end walls 3, 3, and bottom 4, the lower portion of the front wall being cut away to admit of the insertion of a drawer or dust receptacle 5. Located within this box are two horizontal boards or shelves 6, 6, inclined or set at an angle, and upon which the screen 7 rests. This screen consists of a rectangular frame with a bottom 8, of reticulated metal, or open mesh mate- This screen is provided with a handle rial.

9, which passes througha slot in one of the end walls. The numeral 10 denotes the top of the box, having an opening at one end, through which access maybe had to the screen. Secured to one of the inclined shelves, is a strip of india rubber or other similar material which will allow the dust and ashes falling upon the shelf to drop into the receptacle below, but preventing the same from escaping upward, thus acting as a valve. Secured to the front, rear, and one of the end Walls are upwardly projecting cleats 14, to receive the supplemental top 15 and the hinged cover 16. The cleats 14, secured to the walls 2, 2, extend from end to end thereof.
The operation will be readily understood: The material to be screened is placed in the screen which is reciprocated by means of the handle, whereby the dust and ashes are caused to fall through the meshes in the bottom thereof, into the inclined shelves, and from thence to the receptacle. The box is perfectly tight so that no dust or ashes can escape therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
An ash sifter comprising the rectangular box, the removable ash receptacle, the inclined converging shelves, one of which is provided with a strip of india rubber, the reciprocating screen, located above the said shelves and the supplemental top and hinged cover, all constructed and combined substantially as described. v
