SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,165, dated 33,1898.

To all whom it mayconoern':

Be it known that I," DANIEL S. MGKINLAY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer-.

bag is preferably turned inward, forming a continuous flap preferably all round the inside of its mouth, but the flap 2 may be of other substancethan the body of bag 1 and may be affixed to the bags month, if desired. 0n the meeting surfaces of these flaps 2 I preferably place mucilaginous substance, rendering them adhesive, and this adhesive substance may be on one or both meeting surfaces but I do not confine myself toadhesive substance as a fastener.-

The operation is'as follows: When the flaps 2 are in'position and depending in the bags mouth and rendered adhesive as shown, any substance desired is placed in the bag and the adhesive substance is dampened in any desired mauner'and the uniting surfaces of the flaps 2are pressed together and adhere, forming a. permanent closure of the bag without the use of strings .or other like adjuncts, i. e., the permanent closure is such that the bag 1,01106 closed cannot be opened without rupturing either the bag or the flaps, and the flaps 2 being turned inward or hanging down- "ward in the mouth of the bag 1 presents a smooth and regular surface upon the top of the bag'when it is permanently closed and one not so liable to accidental rupture as it front elevation of a bag would be if the cemented flaps protruded outside instead of being protected by being hidden inside the bag, and being inside the mouth,the top of the bag is smooth, level and unobstructed, which allows ofpacking the bags closely and securely, the bottom of one bag resting on the top of another and when so packed, the shifting or shucking of the bags in transit does not injure the flaps or the closure, as the flaps do not present an outside raised, bunched or hard surface for the bag or other article resting on it to catch upon andthus easily injure the bag, aud'the flaps being turned inward give a smooth and neat appearance to the top of the bag. 3

v I am aware thatbagshavaheen .madeham ing a flap inside the bags mouth arranged to be simply rolled together but not to be permanently attached, and in such bags the mouth of the bag has to be'closed bya string tied or fastened'about it as the rolling of the" flaps together does not form apermanen't closure and I disclaim as to such bags and such closures of them. I also disclaim as to all bags, envelopes or other receptacles having the edges of the mouth gummed and stucktogether, the gummed edges rising upward and outside the bags mouth as is done in case of certain envelopes.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:-

1. A bag having its mouth or top turned inward forming a flap inside the mouth of the bag; the free edges of the flap hanging downward inside said mouth and arranged to be i fastened together while so hanging forming a permanent closure of the bag and a smooth, unobstructed top thereto, for the purposes described.

2. A bag having a flap in its mouth, the free edges of the flap hanging downward inside the bag and arrangedto be fastened while so hanging forming a permanent closure of the bag and asmooth unobstructed top thereto for the purposes described.
