SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,804, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed April 5, 1892. Serial No. 427.824. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Lighters, (Oase No. 1,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gas lighting attachments and its object is to provide a convenient device for lighting the gas without calling into requisition the electric current and without the necessity of striking a match, thus avoiding delay and inconvenience.
My invention consists in the combination of a ratchet wheel and a dog mounted upon a lever working in connection therewith, whereby upon the motion of thelever said ratchet wheel is turned which rotates a disk of paper containing a circular row of fulminating caps, whereby said fulminating caps are brought undera projecting spring, which spring causes *sufficient frictional heat to discharge said fulminating cap.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a View of my apparatus in place. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View of the mechanism separate from the gas standard with the plate bearing the uppercollardropped. Fig.4is a view at right angles to that of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the manner in mounting the dog. Fig. 6 is a detailed View showing the ratchet wheel. Fig. 7 is a view of the disk of paper containing the fulminating caps.

Referring now to Figs. l and 2, it will be seen that the disk of fulminating caps a is mounted upon a metal wheel b which metal wheel is in permanent engagement with the ratchet wheel c, said ratchet Wheel being adapted to be moved by the dog cl, the lever e and a suitable cord or chain attachment e. The lever eis pivoted at e2 with stops e3, c4 on each side thereof to limit its motion. Attached to levereis the spiral spring f which holds the lever against the upper stop e3. The dog (Z which is pivoted at f is below the horizontal diameter of said ratchet wheel c, so that when the lever eis pulled down the ratchet wheel will be moved the circumferentialdistance of one of its teeth andthe force of springfcauses lever e to regain its former position. In this motion of the ratchet wheel c the paper disk d is caused topass under the spring g thereby causing one of the caps h immediately in the path of said spring to be fired, thus causing the gas which has been turned on to ignite.
It will be observed by reference to Figs. l and 2 thathe disk of fulminating caps d is placed parallel with the mouth of the tip c'. The disk a is of va well known construction. I provide slots k, lo, and Z by which slots, in conjunction with the pins mmand thumb piece fn, the-paper disk is held in place. This thumb piece n is of a size about equal or slightly smaller than the slot Z. When the disk is in place upon the metal disk b, the thumb piece is turned partly around so as to hold said paper disk firmly in engagement therewith.
In mounting my device upon the gas standards, I provide a collar o upon plate o', said plate being hinged at p to the main portion of my apparatus. Upon the said plate 0 I also provide a collar q which collar, in conjunction with collar o holds the apparatus rigidly in place upon the standard of the gas tip. This hinged plate o' is provided with arms or projections r r, said arms being adapted to engage with projections s s upon the plate t. The pivot w upon which ratchet wheel c is mounted is preferably elongated so as to meet plate o and hold same rmly in place in conjunction With said armsr r. The edges of the projections s s are sharpened so as to engage readily with the grooves provided upon the interior surface of arms fr r as shown in Fig. 3. The arms are sprung in place and serve to hold the plate o parallel to plate t, and at the same time to press the spring g against the surface of the disk o.. Access is thus readily obtained to the metal wheel hto renew the collars is slightly smaller than the diameter of the standard of the gas jet thus securing thorough engagement with said standard.
The dog d I preferably mount as shown in Fig. v5. It will be seen that the pivotal connection of said dog with lever e is embedded in a recess in said lever. The shape of this pivotf is such that the dog cannot be withdrawn, and when the protecting plate which I provide is put in place over said pivot, the mounting of the dog is made permanent and secure. The spring@ bearing against the dog d serves to keep the latter in engagement with the ratchet wheel c.
In the illustration of my device I have simply shown the ordinary gas standard. It is obvious that the apparatus which I have described may be adapted to form of gas burners in which the gas cocks are operated by a lever pulled by a-string. I am` aware `that a disk with a circular row ot' `tulminating caps has been used for lighting a candle and I do not claim this broadly as my invention, but
\Vhat I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. i In a gas lighter the combination with the disk ct bearing fulminating caps, of the metal wheel b upon which said disk is mounted, the ratchet wheel c the dogdengaging therewith, the lever e upon which said dog is pivoted, the spring g adapted to bear upon the surface of disk a and to make frictional contactwith the fulminating caps and means for attaching said disk in proximity to a gas tip, substantially as described.
2. In agas lighter the combination with the disk bearing fulminating caps, of a ratchet wheel and pawl adapted to give said disk a step by step rotary movement, a spring bearing upon the surface of said disk and adapted to make contact with said fulminating caps as said disk is rotated and a standard bearing collars adapted to t the standard of a gas tip, said standard being hinged to a plate supporting said ratchet wheel and disk and adapted to be detachably held parallel with saidv plate whereby the disk may be held in proximity to the gas tip and may be swung away therefrom to renew said disk, substantially as described.
3. In a gas lighter the combination with the disk bearing fulminating caps of a ratchet wheel and pawl adapted to give said disk a step by step rotary movement, a spring bearing upon the surface of said disk and adapted to make contact-withsaid fulminating caps as said disk is rotated and a standard bearing said spring and collars adapted to lit the `standard of the gas tip, said standard being
