Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON PASIERBSKI, OF MIKULTSCHT J'TZ, GERMANY.
IGNITING DEVICE FOR MINEBS LAMPS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON PASIERBSKI, a citizen of the German Empire, and residing at Mikultschutz, Silesia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Igniting Device for Miners Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention consists of an improved igniting device for miners and other closed safety lamps and of the details of construction hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The present igniting device comprises a spring pressed pyrophoric body such as ceric iron and a roughened steel surface, adapted to be moved over the said body from the exterior of the lamp, by hand, and, when released, to be rapidly returned to its initial position, by means of a spring or its equivalent, the friction thus caused between the steel surface and the pyrophoric body, generating a spark, which ignites the lamp. The device may be modified according as to whether it is to be used in connection with gas (acetylene or the like) or benzin lamps.
The figure of the accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the invention, suitable for an acetylene gas lamp.
In the device illustrated, a segment shaped or curved plate Z, having a roughened sur face to contact with the pyrophoric body 2', is linked to the upper end of a double arm lever 0 pivotally su ported in the housing at g, the said plate being guided between a stationary pin m and the spring pressed pyrophoric body a. The arm or plate Z is advantageously bent to a curve or are struck from the center Q of its pivot. The lower end of the lever 0 is in detached engagement with a spring pressed rod 1" having a button Specification of Letters Patent.

at the exterior of the lamp. This rod 1" is adapted to engage the lower end of the lever 0 but is not linked to the same, in order to enable the housing I) with the whole igniting device to be withdrawn from the lamp, by simply withdrawing the rod r from engagement with the same. The guide plate 70 serves to guide the spark produced to the mouth of the burner n to ignite the gas escaping therefrom. The friction between the plate Z and the body 2' is caused by the action of the spring 70, which pulls the lever 0 rapidly back to its initial position, after the rod 1" and button have first been depressed inwardly and then released.
The present igniting device may be used in connection with miners lamps or safety locomotive lamps and the details of construction might be varied in many ways, without departing from the nature of the present invention.
I claim as my invention In a pyrophoric ignition device for miners lamps, comprising a downwardly extending spring pressed pyrophoric body and a spring-returned roughened metallic surface to contact with the same, the combination of a casing, a lever mounted therein, a pivot to support said lever, a roughened arm of arc shape struck from the center, means for retaining the said arm against the pyrophoric body and a spring pressed pin to operate said lever from the outside of the lamp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANTON PASIERBSKI.
