Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHIME JOSEPH OSCAR DEPLANQUE, of 3 Avenue des Chalets, Paris, in the Republic of France, engineer, have invented Gas-Igniting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved ferro-cerium lighter or igniter for gas at burners, furnaces, stoves and the like, said igniter being characterized by the arrangement and the combination of the following constituent parts:
(a) An operating device comprising a rod for setting the apparatus, this rod being provided with a link or connecting rod connected to a pawl acting on a circular rack or ratchet wheel serving to turn a disk or wheel with a milled or roughened edge rubbing against a piece of ferro-cerium, the rod being provided with an operating spring and with a retaining and releasing device comprising a spring and a press-button.
(b) An adjustable fixing device permittin the igniter to be mounted instantaneous y on any gas burner or furnace.
This igniter is very simple, is certain in operation and its attaching or fixing device enables it to be fixed on all types of furnace or other gas apparatus.
The invention will be hereinafter described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the igniter set, with themechanism in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a plan corresponding to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows the igniter looking from the side of its support.

Fig. 8 shows the apparatus applied to a gas stove.
As shown in the drawing (Figs. 1 to 5). this arrangement is formed by the combination of the following parts, mounted on a flat base a.'a guide 6 for a small block of ferro-cerium c; an advancing spring d for the block of ferro-cerium; an arbor e on which are fixed :-a friction disk 7 having a milled or roughened edge serving to rub against the ferro-cerium and a pinion g for turning the friction-disk; an arbor 71. on which are loosely mounted a circular rack i fixed to a toothed wheel j; a spring pawl 70 serving to advance the circular rack z, and a spring pawl Z which prevents the rack from turning back; a setting bar m sliding in two brackets 91. n and serving to actuate, through the medium of a link 0, the pawl 7: in engagement with the circular rack; a returning spring p for the setting bar m,- a detent-spring g for the setting bar, this spring engaging in a notch m in the bar m when the latter is drawn back and being released by a press-button 1'. Finally, a bridge-piece .9 supports the arbors e and h.
The flat base a is mounted on a support made in two parts t t pivotally connected together by a hinge u.
The part t is formed by a kind of foot permitting the position of the lighter or igniter to be adjusted relatively to the burner-bars of the gas-stove or other apparatus to which it is to be secured. The foot t is provided, for this purpose, with two slots 4;, e, in which engage two set-screws 00-00. It is only necessary to unscrew these, in order to enable the position of the lighter to be altered.
The other part t of the same support is formed by a jaw or socket which fits over the edge of the stove or furnace and is fixed by means of set-screws y-y.
Finally the jaw has a lug a forming a spring, which enables the lighter to be held against the burner-bars of the gas-stove during the igniting, while the hinge it enables the apparatus to be moved away from the burner-bars during the operation of the stove or furnace.
In order to use the lighter, the setting bar m is drawn back, by grasping its button or handle m until the detent-spring g has fallen into the notch m. During this time, the link 0 connecting the setting bar m to the spring pawl is has caused this pawl to slide back over the backs of the teeth of the rack 2' while the latter is held stationary by the pawl Z. Moreover, the spring 1), is tensioned. Upon actuation of the button 1", the detent-spring g is disengaged, so that the setting bar m is free to move forward again under the action of its spring p. During this last movement of-the setting bar m, the link 0 acts on the pawl 70 which, in engagement with one of the teeth of the circular rack 2', drives the latter at the same time turning the toothed Wheel j. This wheel in engagement with the pinion 9, turns the latter rapidly as well as the friction-disk f to which it is fixed, in such a manner that the friction of this disk on the ferro-cerium 0 causes sparks to be produced which ignite the gas at the burner-bars.
In the modification shown in Figs? 6 and 7 of the drawing, the parts whichhave the same function as the elements shown in Figs. 1 to 5, are designated by similar reference characters with the index X. The friction-disk f at the same time forms a V circular rack at 5* and the gear-wheel entering into the construction of the form first described are dispensed with. In this case, the link 0 of the operat'ng member m directly drives the pawl k actuating the fric-tion-disk f provided with the circular rack i while the retaining pawl Z" prevents the friction-disk from. turning back.
Finally the setting bar m acts as a pusher,
soa that the lighter is set by pressingon the button m instead of pulling the same as in the example above described.
Claims:
1. An ignition device comprising a supporting plate, adjustable attaching means on one sideof the plate, spring controlled ignit- C'opies of this patent may be obtained for 1110 means and locking means therefor on the other side of the plate, said spring controlled means having its parts arranged to move in a plane adjacent said plate, and means operable from the side of the plate adjacent the attaching means to disengage said spring controlled means from said look ing means.
2. In an igniting device, the combination of a plate having a press button and a-tt'aching means on one side thereof, with a block of ferro-cerium, a wheel having a rough edge contacting with said block, a ratchet wheel, a pivoted paw-l integral with the adapted to rotate said ratchet, a link and rod operatively connected with said pawl, an actuating spring engaging said rod, all said parts the opposite side of the plate, and a retain ing member controlled by said press button and adapted to engage the rod when the said spring under tension.
