' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MUNN TROWBRIDGE, OF HAoKENsAoK, NEW JERSEY.
BELT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,639, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed April 12, 1892.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MUNN TROWBRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hackensack, Bergen cou nt y, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for holdinglawn tennis and other waist belts in place over the waistband of trousers, thereb avoiding the slipping upward of the belt and exposure of the Waist band and the line where the waist band and shirt meet.
The invention is set forth in the accompanying description and claim.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar figures of reference refer to like parts, Figure 1 is afront view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers showing my invention applied thereto. Fig.2 is a similar view with a belt held in place by a pair of catches"in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 3 is a front view in perspective of a catch constructed in accordance with this invention.
Ordinarily a waist belt is held in place on lawn tennis and other negligee trousers by means of vertical strips secured at each end to the waist band, the belt extending between these vertical strips and the waist band. This arrangement requires time to insert the belt within and remove it from the vertical strips and the latter are apt to be broken or torn out.
In carrying out my invention I provide a catch 1, constructed of any suitable material, and as here shown, preferably of wire, bent or formed so as to consist of an upwardly projecting back member 2, which is located behind the belt, and is provided with a catch 3 to engage the trousers button, and a downwardly projecting front member 4 which extends down over the outside of the belt and prevents the latter slipping up. The catch 1, as here shown, is preferably formed of a single piece of wire, the back member 2 consisting of two upright extensions 5 of the wire bent inward laterally to a V shape to add strength thereto, and bent over at their 'top and downward in the form of a depending loop, forming the catch'3 to engage the trousers button. The upper end of the catch 3 is Serial No. 423,850. (No model.)
formed with a narrow neck as shown at 6, to.
5 of the back member 2, are bent over and extend upward forming the vertical extensions 7 and the latter are bent over at the top and extend downward forming the extensions 8 of the front member 4, and connect together at the bottom by the cross wire 9. It will thus be seen that the catch 1 essentially forms a depending U -shaped hook havingaback member with a button catch.
In use only two of the catches 1, may be used with the buttons on the front of the waist band, as shown, although two more may be used in the rear of the waist band to hold the back part of a belt down. The catches 1 are put in place by pushing up a catch 3 into engagement with each of the two trousers buttons 10 on the front of the waist band 11. The belt 12, extending around the waist band 11, is then slipped up beneath front members 4 of the catches l, and over the back member 2. The belt 12 will in this way be securely held from slipping up and may be readily secured in place, or removed, as well as the catches 1. The catches 1 are pref erably detachable, but may be permanently secured in place by sewing or otherwise.
Having described my invention, I claim:-
The waist belt catch 1,formed of wire with the back member 2, consisting of two upright extensions 5, having at their top the depending loop button catch 3, two extensions 7 extending upward from the bottom of extensions 5, and the front member 4, consisting of the extensions 8, projecting downward from the upper ends of the extensions 7 and connected-together at their lower ends by the cross-wire 9, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses.
MUNN TROWBRIDGE.
