SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,700, dated December' 6, 1892. Application tiled December 14, 1891. Serial No. 415,085. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HERBERT C. BRITTAIN and V PETER J. SHRUM, citizens of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Wire Mats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.

Our invention has relation to that class of mats made of wire and having wire-bound edges; and it consists in the novel construction thereof, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claim.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a plan View of our improved mat. Fig. 2 is an edge view of apart of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the trimming or binding and fastener.

A designates the main or body part of our improved mat, B the trimming or border thereof, and C the means for fastening the trimming. The body A is composed of the pieces a a', each of which pieces consists of one or more strands of wire coiled and twisted, as shown. The pieces a are laid in diagonal parallel lines, and the pieces a are also laid diagonally and parallel with each other, but at an angle to the pieces a, which they cross and with which they are intercoiled at the points of intersection. It will be observed that the angles in which the pieces a and a', respectively, extend is such as to form rhombus-shaped openings D and Dand V-shaped opening D", said openings D being so located with respect to said openings D that their longitudinal centers will be directly opposite the ends of the same, and said openings D being located at the sides of the mat between the junctions a of the pieces@ and a. The pieces a and a are joined at the sides of the mat by twisting their ends together. The two adjacent pieces a at the respective corners of the mat are connected together by the short piece a. The binding B consists of a continuous piece of wire bent to form the parallel strips b on each side thereof and the connecting-strips b and b, said strips b join- It is held in place by the wire C, which is bent alternately in and out in a curvilinear course, crossing each strip b in its passage around the mat, and also crossing itself at the points c, which latter are located opposite orwithin the openings h2 in the binding B and in the openings D in the body A alternately. It will be observed that the pieces a and a are bent or twisted so as to form projecting portions l, alternating with hollows 2. This is advantageous, as it increases the facility with which the mat will remove mud, doc., from the feet of the user and at the same time make it of such strength and durability as to obviate the necessity of employing supplemental tie or brace rods or wires, which not only add to the expense of the mat, but tend to decrease the iiexibility thereof. It will be further observed that the binding B is not directly intercoiled with the bodyAand also that the fastener C is not intercoiled with the body of the lnat except at the center of the ends thereof. This construction is advantageous in that it does not interfere with the folding of the mat when desired. Thus we have provided a mat of simple construction, which will possess increased effectiveness in the accomplishment of its purpose and be of increased durability Without loss of iiexibility.

We do not claim, broadly, a mat composed entirely of wire and consisting of a body having openings, a binding, and means for holding the binding in place, since we are aware that such construction is not broadly new; but

What we do claim is- The herein-described mat, consisting of the body A, binding B, and fastener C, said body consisting of the diagonal pieces a and c', crossing each other at such angles as to form V-shaped openings at the edge of the body IOO the ends thereof, al1 substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
