SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 401,066, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed December 3, 1888. Serial No, 292,490. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABBOTT M. REEVES, 'of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Mats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention comprises a number of metallic strips peculiarly constructed and pivotally joined, as will fully appear in the subjoined detailed description and appended claims.

In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of a section of my improved mat. Fig 2 is a plan of a portion of a strip, showing different stages in its development. Fig. 3 is an end view of a completed strip,and Fig. 4 is an end view of a portion of the completed mat.

The strips of which the mat is composed are represented by letters A B O D E, one strip by each letter.- Each strip is formed of a continuous wire bent abruptly zigzag, as shown in Fig. 2, and having the apeXes or loops bent downward to form supports and coiled inwardly to form bearings for the rods that connect one strip with another. In each strip corresponding italics are used to designate the different partsas, for instance, in strip A, where a represents the horizontal wires that form the mat proper.

a represents the downward extensions that form the supports, and a represents the coils by which the strips are connected.

The apexes of one strip are placed between the apexes of another strip, and the two strips are secured together in a pivotal manner by 3 5 to stiffen the mat. A mat so constructed is flexible, and so may be rolled for packing, shipping, &c. Its upper surface is well elevated, and it may be made comparatively light without affecting its durability.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A mat composed of strips of wire having each horizontal portions, downward extensions, and bends or coils, as set forth.

2. A mat composed of strips of wire having each horizontal portions, downward'extensions, and bends or coils, and rods securing the strips together by passing through the coils, as set forth.
