UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
ORSON E. WI-IEATON, OF GRUNDY CENTRE, IOIVA.
SEAL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,591, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed June 16, 1891 Serial No. 396,446. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ORSON E. WHEATON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Grundy Centre, in the county of Grundy and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to seal-locks; and it consists of the construction, relative arrangement, and operation of the several parts, all of which will be fully and clearly explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates my improved device as applied to a car-door. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken in the line 03 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail, enlarged, of the locking-pin; Fig. 4, a view in perspective of a seal-link; and Fig. 5 is a similar view, but showing the form the link assumes when in position.
Referring to the several figures of the drawings, A denotes the hasp, which is secured at one end to the door by means of a suitable staple or eye a. The other end of the hasp is provided with the tongue 1), formed with an opening I) therein and with a shouldered portion 11 said tongue and hasp being adapted to be inserted and held between the two ears 0 c on the face-plate c, which is secured to the door-frame in any suitable or preferred manner. The space between the ears 0 c conforms in shape to the tongue b, one of the ears 0 being provided with a shouldered portion 0 which is slightly separated from the shouldered portion b when the parts are in their locked position. The ears 0 0 have openings therein registering with the opening in the tongue 1), although I prefer to make the opening in the ear 0 of smaller size, as will be explained.
D is a locking-pin, which is adapted to be inserted within the openings in the tongue and ears and which conforms in cross-sec- One end of the pin is provided with a head d, having a hole 11' therein for connection with a suitable chain, as shown. The other end is tapered as at (Z and fits the opening of reduced size in the ear 0'.
e e are jaws formed integral with the pin, the jaw e extending slightly above and over the jaw e and terminating at its base in a line coincident with the base of the jaw 6, thereby forming a substantially-triangularshaped opening, the purpose of which I will now explain.
f represents the seal-link, which is constituted of a strip of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is cut through for a portion of its length, as shown at f, thereby forming, when the parts are separated, an endless link. The portion f of this link is adapted when in operation to be inserted between the shouldered portions 1) 0 with the other portion extending over the extension 5. The pin now being inserted, the jaw e depresses the portion f of the link until it assumes the shape shown in Fig. 5. It will now be found that the pin is held in position by such link and is prevented from withdrawal by reason of the jaw 6.
By my invention I am enabled to manufacture very inexpensively a seal-lock which eifectively prevents the parts from being disengaged without destroying the lock or the link.
I claim In a seal-lock, the combination, with a hasp formedwith the shouldered tongue having the opening therein, of the locking-plate having the ears, as described, one of which is shouldered and both having openings, a locking-pin adapted to be inserted in such openings and formed with the jaws, and a continuous flexible link adapted to be bent by one of these jaws and to lock the pin in position.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ORSON E. WHEATON.
