Our invention relates to that class of shoes used in athletic sport or exercise, and although more particularly designed for use in the game of foot-ball is also applicable for use in all field or gymnasium sports.
Our invention consists of an athletic or sporting shoe the sole and heel whereof are provided with pyramidal-shaped studs Or prozo jections formed of leather lifts, said studs being secured to the sole and heel by rivets passing entirely through the latter and through the studs, the heads of the rivets being on the inside of the shoe and the outer z 5 ends of the rivets projecting through the Studs, where they are clinched and provided with an outer lift or protecting-piece secured to the stud, substantiallyas described. Where, as in foot-ball, it is desirable that no metal go shall be exposed, We cover the end of the rivet at the end of the stud or projection opposite to the sole with a covering or layer of leather fastened to the end of the projection by brads or other suitable fastening.
Reference now beinghad to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents the sole of the shoe turned toward the observer, A A representing the leather sole, and B B the leather studs or projections, said studs being 4o pyramidal in shape and formed of superposed lifts or layers b, as represented in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
Fig. 2 represents a cross-section of one of the studs or leather projections, B representing the stud, C the metal rivet, A the sole, and B' the leather-surface lift forming a covering or layer over the upset end of the rivet.
Fig. 3 represents the leather stud Or projection as it appears with the end ofthe rivet covered, and Fig. 4 the leather stud or projection with the end Of the rivet uncovered.
Fig. 5 represents the metal rivet.
As shown in the drawings, the solid head of the rivet is on the inside, the rivet passing clear through the sole or heel and the projection and its Outer end being upset or clinched on the outer side of the stud, a suitable Washer, as c, being used, if preferred.
What we desire to claim and secu re hy Letters Patent is- As an improved article of manufacture, an athletic or sporting shoe the sole and heel whereof are provided With pyramidal-shaped studs or projections formed of leather lifts, said studs being secured to the sole and heel by rivets passing entirely through the latter and through the studs, the heads of the rivets being on the inside of the shoe and the outer ends of the rivets projecting through the studs, Where they are clinched and provided with an outer lift or protecting-piece secured to the stud, substantially as described.
