POLE-TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,942, dated November 29, 1892.
Application iiled May 20, 1892. Serial No. 433,720. (No model.)
.is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in safety-tips for poles of vehicles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device which Will prevent a neckyoke from slipping olif the front end of a pole in event of one or more tracesk becoming detached or broken, and to avoid accidents incident to a neck-yoke becoming detached from a pole and the latter dropping and annoying the animals.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View ot' a neck-yoke constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a detailperspective View of the latch. Fig. 4 is a reverse plan view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corre- .sponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 designates apole-tip, constructed of metal and arranged on the front end of a pole 2 and provided with a socket 3, in which is pivoted an inner end 4 of a latch 5, which is arranged on the lower face of the pole and is adapted to receive and retain a neck-yoke center 6 of a neck-yoke 7. The socket 3 of the pole-tip is formed by depending flanges and is rectangular, and the pivot 8, which secures the inner ends of the latch in the socket, passes through the side flanges. The inner end ofthe latch is provided with a heel 9, against which bears a spiral spring 10, arranged within a recess of the tongue and adapted to hold the latch closed. The front or outer endvof the latch, which is semicircular, is provided with an inwardly-'extending arm l1 and is provided with a concave face 12 to conform to the configuration of the tip 1, and it is provided with an eye 13, by means of which the latch may be readily opened. The arm 11 extends Within a short distance ot' a shoulder 14 at the front of the socket 3, so as to allow the neck-yoke center to be moved inward against the socket to' permit the latch to open, and the said arm when thelatch is closed rests in a depression 15 of the pole-tip.' The shoulder 14 is formed by an inclined curved flange formed integral With the pole-tip and adapted to provide a bearing for the neck-yoke center.
It will be seen that the safety pole-tip is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and is capable of securely-connecting a neck-yoke and a pole. l
What I claim is- The combination of a pole-tip having a depression in its lower face, a forwardly-disposed latch having one end pivoted to the under side of the pole-tip in rear of the depression and provided at its front end with a rearwardlyextending arm adapted to tit Within the depression When the latch is closed to be engaged by a neck-yoke center, and a spring for normally holding the latch closed, substantially as described.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
