SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,894, dated November 29, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, SAMUEL RACHELMAN and MAX RAoHELMAN,citizens of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloons; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to an improvement in trousers, overalls, and other like articles of apparel, being designed more particularly as an improvement upon the invention disclosed in the Letters Patent granted to us May 24, 1892, No. 475,416; and the object of our present invention is to provide elastic expansion around the waist and in the back and to also provide means for holding the trousers in proper shape and to permit ease and comfort to the wearer by providing a strap, which is designed to pass over the hips and is connected with the body of the trousers below the waistband, a plait being provided in the rear, which will permit of a stooping or bending position of the body and prevent the garment from being stretched out of shape.

A further object of the invention is to provide elastic suspending-straps adapted to be connected to buttons on avest, shirt, or other article of apparel to serve in conjunction with the hip-strap to support the trousers, or alternately with respect to the hi p-strap when the pressure of the same is too great upon the stomach of the wearer.

Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of the upper portion of a pair of trousers, the same being thrown open to illustrate our improvements. Fig.2 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of a pair of trousers embodying our invention. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the dotted line 00 0c of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail elevation illustrating the connect-ion of one of the short suspending-straps to the trousers.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A indicates a pair of trousers, which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction, having their waistband left open or slitted at the two points a, which points are preferably on the sides, and the outer side of each slitted or open port-ion is provided with a button I), and the edges of these open portions are connected by elastic pieces B, which are buttoned over the buttons on the outer sides of said open portions.

Connected by the elastic strips to to one of each pair of buttons 19 and to the button I), situated slightly in advance of the slits a, (see Fig. 4,) are the short suspending-straps B, which are provided adjacent to their upper ends with buttonholes 0, designed and adapted to engage buttons upon a vest, shirt. or the like, and serve, in addition to the hip-strap, presently described, to support the trousers or alternately with respect to said strap when the pressure of the same upon the stomach is too great. These suspending-straps B may, if desired, be connected to or formed integral with shoulder-straps instead of being connected to a shirt, vest, or the like, as described.

By reason of the peculiar connection of the suspending-straps B to the trousers, as just described, it will be seen that the said straps Wlll not interfere with the functions of the strips 13, since the elastic connecting-strips a are free to stretch when desired. As better illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the back of the trousers is slitted transversely to permit of the interposition of the strip M, in which a plait or plaits c are formed, preferably, by lapping the outer ends of the strip and sewing the same in such position to the sides of the leg portions or at a point above the hips, although it is obvious that the plait or plaits may be formed in any suitable man ner. Although the use of the interposed strip M is preferable, yet in practice we may dispense with the same and form the plait or plaits in the seat or waistband of the trousers. 0 indicates two similar elastic strips, which are connected at an intermediate point in their length to the garment at a point above the plait or plaits and are connectediat their lower ends to a strip of material M, which is sewed or otherwise connected to the seat portion of the trousers, so that while a stooping or bending position will be allowed, which will cause the plaits to partly open, these elastic strips will close. or partly close the fold as the person returns to a perpendicular position,

These strips are connected to the strip M and to the garment above the plait or plaits by means of buttons 6, so that said strips may be readily removed when they become worn'or injured or it is desirable to wash the trousers. By reason of the strips 0 being connected to the strip M, instead of to the seat of the trousers, it will be seen that the drawer pull upon the elastic strips will not be visible upon the out side of the trousers and the objectionable wrinkling of the seat or back of the trousers will be prevented.

D indicates the hip-strap, which is designed to be fastened around the hips of the wearer and properlysupport the garment. This strap D, which is provided atan intermediate point in its length with an interposed elastic strip D, so as to allow of an expansion around the body, is provided upon opposite sides of said elastic strip with buttonsf, to which the upper ends of the elastic strips 0 are connected, and the said strap D is also provided between the buttonsfand its ends with buttons g, to which are detachably connected the elastic strips 72, which are connected at their opposite ends to the front of the body of the trousers below the strap D, so as to permitthe wearer to bend backward without any inconvenience. The strap D, with the exception of the interposed strip D, is preferably formed from suitable cloth or leather, and it is provided at one end with a buckle F, as shown, for adjustably connecting its ends, although its ends may be buttoned or otherwise connected together. WVhile it is desirable that the strap D should be elastic in a measure, yet by reason of the major portion of the same being formed of cloth or leather we are enabled to get a certain amount of rigidity, which aids materially in properly sustaining the garment and prolonging the usefulness of the same.

In practice it is obvious that our improvements may be applied to any kind of trousers, and they will be found very comfortable to the wearer, as the strap D passes over the hips and the suspending-straps B are connected to a shirt, vest, or other garment, by reason of which the waist is relieved of strain.

Having described our invention, what we claim is '1. In a pair of trousers substantially as described, the combination, with a plait extending transversely across the rear portion of the same and elastic strips arranged on the inner side' of the rear portion and connected to the garment above and below the plait, so as to allow vertical expansion of the rear or seat portion, of the hip-strap connected to the upper ends of the elastic strips and having an interposed elastic strip, so as to allow expansion around the body, the said strap being adapted to pass over the hips and be fastened in front of the user, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a pair of trousers substantially as described, the combination, with a plait extending transversely across the rear portion of the same, the elastic strips arranged on the inner side of the rear port-ion and connected to the garment above and below the plait, so as to allow vertical expansion of the rear or seat portion, and the hip-strap connected to the elastic strips and adapted to pass over the hips and be fastened in front of the user, of the elastic strips it, connected to the inner side of the forward portion of the trousers and to the hip-strap, substantially as specified.

3. In a pair of trousers, the combination, with a strip of material interposed in the rear portion of the same and the transversely-extending plait formed in said interposed strip, of the elastic strips arranged on the inner side of the rear portion of the trousers and connected to the same above and below the plait, so as to allow vertical expansion of the rear or seat portion, the hip-strap connected to the elastic strips in the rear portion of the trousers and adapted to pass over the hips and be buckled in front of the user, and the elastic strips h, connected to the inner side of the forward portion of the trousers and to the hip-strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a pair of trousers, the combination, with a waistband, the slits or openings a,

formed in said waistband, and elastic pieces connecting the walls of the slits or openings, of the suspending'straps B and the pairs of elastic strips a, connecting the suspendingstraps to the waistband, one of each pair of said strips being connected to the waistband immediately adjacent to the rear Walls of the slits or openings Ct, while the other is connected to said waistband slightly in advance of said slits or openings a, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
