Be it known that I, ALFRED N. PARNALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.

My invention consists in the improvement in pipe-wrenches hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved pipe-wrench. Fig. 2 is a rear view in elevation 0f the same.

In the construction of my improved pipewrench A is the body of the Wrench, constructed with alligator-jaws O C', forming a V-shaped bearing in the end thereof to receive a pipe B. These jaws C C are provided with a transverse slot D, which extends through the outer ends of both the jaws C and C and extends downward in the jaw C, so as to form a bearing in which a movable hook E is pivoted by means of a pin F. This hook is made cam-shaped and is provided on its inner face with serrated rearwardly-projecting teeth e, adapted to engage with the surface of a section of pipe B, placed between the jaws C C', and as the pivot F upon which the hook swings is considerably to the rear of and somewhat to one side of the center of the V-shaped bearing between the jaws C C any movement of the handle G of the wrench in the direction of the arrow operates to force the teeth e of the hook E sharply against the pipe and prevents it turning in the V-shaped bearing between the jaws C and C', while the reverse movement of the handle G permits the teeth e to pass over the surface of the pipe B easily in the opposite direction. The transverse slot D in the jaws C C also permits the hook E to close inward sufficiently to engage with a very small pipe when desired as readily as itI will with a larger pipe, thus adaptingit for use on pipes considerably varying in size.

Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable-others to construct and use the saine, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

The combination, in a pipe-wrench, 0f a handle having alligator or V-shaped jaws C C rigidly secured tothe end thereof and having a slot D in one of said jaws, with a camshaped hook E pivoted in the slot D and having rearwardly-projecting teeth e on the inner surface thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
