CLAMP FOR SECURING STEREOTYPE-PLATES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,160, dated November 15, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM FILMER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Clamps'for Securing Stereotype-Plates; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to the class of devices for securing stereotype-plates to their blocks, and particularly to those clamps which are detachable from and independent of the block and fit against the sides thereof when locked up in the chase; and my invention consists of the construction and combination of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

The object of my invention is to hold the clamps well in place and prevent them from rising, which they have a tendency to do under the pressure of the chase-furniture.

My present invention, though applicable to any detachable or independent clamp which lies against the stereotype block or bed, is especially intended as a direct improvement on that clamp patented by me December 13, 1887, No 374,667, and to this patent I hereby make reference.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of myinvention, Figure 1 is a viewshowing the arrangement of my clamps as locked up in the chase. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my clamp. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of clamp, showing it fitted to the block B.

Some of the clamps have adjustable hooks and some have fixed hooks, as represented by the clamps G and the clamps H of my former patent.

In illustrating my present improvement I have shown the clamp G with an adjustable hook The shank g of this hook is threaded on the screw 9 seated in the stock or body of the clamp, said screw having a pinion g accessible to the ratchet-faced tool employed in operating it through the groove 9 in the clamp-body. The clamp body or stock fits against the side of the block or bed B of the stereotype-plate O, and its hook overlaps the plate and holds it to the block, the clamp itself being locked in the chaseAby the usual furniture, (represented by D.) I have found in practice that under the pressure of this furniture the clamp has a tendency to lift. up or rise from its bearing on the side of the block, because it is wholly independent of the block and has only a top bearing on the stereotypeplate. To remedy this, I provide theclamp body or stock with a retaining point or points, (represented by g There are preferably two of these, one near each end of the stock. They project from the inner surface of the stock andenter sockets b in block or bed B. They may be formed integral with the clamp-stock, or they may be, as here shown, short screws which pass through the stock and serve thus the further purpose of holding together the two parts of which the stock is usually composed. These effectually prevent any tendency of the clamp to rise and hold it well in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The improved clamp for securing stereotype-plates to their supporting beds or blocks, consisting of independent detachable stocks made in two parts and bearing against the sidesof the bed or block, said stocks having hooks overlapping the edge of the stereotypeplate and having screws passing through and securing its parts together, the inner ends of said screws forming retaining-points engaging the sides of the bed or block, whereby the stocks are held in position, substantially as herein described.
