Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
lMPROVED DUST PAN AND BRUSH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,582, dated July 4, 1865.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES H. PARKER and GRIDLEY BURNHAM, both of Waltham, in the county ot' Middlesex and State of Mast snchusetts, have invented a new and useful Figure lis a transverse section ot our iuvention, taken in the plane of the line xx, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same. i
Our invention consists in the combination of a. dust-pan and d ust-brush, the latterbeing inserted inthe handle of the former, which is made hollow and sufliciently large to receive the same within it, and from which the brush can be withdrawn at any moment for use.
To enable others to understand our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a dust-pan, which may be of the usual or of any suitable or desirable form or construction, and of any suitable metal or material.
B represents the handle thereof, which is made hollow and sufficiently large to receive within it a (lush-brush, C, the upper part, a, of the handle of the said brush being made large enough to lit tightly into the handle of the dust-pan. A ring, b, is secured to its end, by
4 which to Vhang up the whole when not in use.
The brush C in the present instance is made of bristles, and it is found that by keeping the brush in the handle of the pan it tends to compress the bristles of the brush in proper shape, and thus prevents their spreading apart, which usually occurs when the brush is carelessly thrown around.
The advantages of having these articles combined are very many. They are such articles as necessarily belong together, and by having them combined in this way much trouble and vexation in looking for one which has been mislaid to use with the other will be avoided.
A neat article of this kind may be gotten up scribed.
CHARLES H. PARKER.. GRIDLEY BURNHAM. Witnesses:
