- my said invention consists in a square wooden vessel provided with a chute and a bail, forming a scuttle for coal, &c. It has been usual heretofore to form coal-scnttles of metal. These are very liable to rust out in consequence of damp coal-dust adhering to the bottoms and around the lowerparts of the sides. This dampness, producing rust, is often increased by refuse and wet matter thrown into the scuttle, and in almost all instances the metal scuttles are destroyed by rust around the lower portions, while the upper parts are good. My invention obviates these difficulties, my scuttle not being liable to rust, and being much cheaper than a metal scuttle.

COAL-SCUTTLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 I ,1 39, dated November 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS L. BYRN, ofthe city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Scuttles for Goal, 850. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making part of this specification, wherein Figure l is an elevation of said scuttle, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of said scuttle.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The nature of my said invention consists in a square wooden vessel provided with a chute and a bail, forming a scuttle for coal, &c. It has been usual heretofore to form coal-scnttles of metal. These are very liable to rust out in consequence of damp coal-dust adhering to the bottoms and around the lowerparts of the sides. This dampness, producing rust, is often increased by refuse and wet matter thrown into the scuttle, and in almost all instances the metal scuttles are destroyed by rust around the lower portions, while the upper parts are good. My invention obviates these difficulties, my scuttle not being liable to rust, and being much cheaper than a metal scuttle.
In the drawings, a a are the sides, cthe back,
and b the front portions, of the scuttle. These diverge slightly, so that the upper part of the scuttle is wider than the lower, and the sides a a and front b rise higher than the back 0, so as to be in the shape of a chute.
