UNITED rates PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK V. ETTLINGER, OF WVEST BRIGHTON, NEIV YORK.
COVER FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,790, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed June 18, 1892. Serial No. 437-14 N model-l To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. ETTLIN GER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vest Brighton, Richmond county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jewelry and other boxes; and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cover forsaid boxes, which is finished in such a manner as to make the name of the dealer selling thejewelry or other article very conspicuous and impart an attractive appearance to the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Fign re 1 represents a plan view of my improved jewelry-box cover. Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the pad, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The cover Ais made of pasteboard orother suitable material and is provided in its top with an oval or circular opening B, the edges of which are slightly beveled, as shown at I). Said cover is provided with the usual side pieces B and a lining B which may be made of satin or other material in the usual manner. In said opening B in the top plate of the cover I place a pad 0, which is composed of a base-plate D of substantially the same shape as the opening B, but slightly greater both in length and width. Upon said baseplate D a filling d of cotton or like fibrous material is placed, and this is covered by a piece d of satin, silk, velvet, plush, or like material, which forms the top of the cushion, and the said edges of which are drawn over the edges of the base-plate D and glued to the same. The cushion D is placed against the under side of the top plate of the cover A and pressed upward, so that the raised part of the cushion passes up through the opening B, the beveled edges of the opening being pressed slightly into the pad near the edges of the same. A sheet of pasteboard, paper, fabric, or other material F is then pasted on the under side of the covered top plate and on the bottom of the base-plate D of the pad for the purpose of holding said pad in place in the opening of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a box-cover having an opening, of a pad placed in said opening, which pad is composed of a base-plate, a layer of fibrous material on said base-plate, and a covering of satin or like material drawn over said fibrous material and pasted to the edges of the base-plate, said cushion projecting up through the opening in the top plate, and a piece pasted to the under side of the cover and to the under side of the base-plate of the pad for the purpose of holding said pad in place in the said opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK V. ETTLINGER.
