HERBERT H. SANDERSON, OF WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
STAlR-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,260, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed .I une 24; 1901. Serial No, 65,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.;
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. SANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stair-pads, such as are placed under a staircarpet upon the treads for the purpose of cushioning the carpet.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved stair-.pad which is simple in construction, strong and durable, can be manufactured easily and rapidly, and is not expensive.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, Figure l is a vertical transverse sectional view of my improved stairpad; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Ei g.
3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view onthe line 3. 3 of Fig. Al.
The pad is constructed with a backing or base A of pasteboard, cardboard, or likematerial ofthe proper size and shape, taking into consideration that the front edge is to be curved over to form the nose o1: lip B, which is to t on the nosing of the stair-tread. A piece of fabric C, such as ordinary white goods or muslin, is placed with its edge part on the under side of the base or backing'A and stitched along said edge to thebacking by machinery, the stitches passing through the fabric and backing and extending in a longitudinal line a from one end of the pad to the other, preferably at the center or midway between the front and rear edges. Then the fabric is drawn over the rear edge, passed over the top of the backing and then over the front edge of the backing, and then the free edge of the fabric is Vstitched by hand to that edge of the fabric previously stitched to the under side of the backing by the machine. Of course in so applying the fabric due allowance is to be made for the iilling or cushioning materialsuch as cotton-batting, tow, excelsior, or any other suitable lling-which is placed between the upper surface of the base .or backing and the top layer of fabric. This filling materialD is then introduced and the top and bottom. layers of fabricl stitched to the backing atend of the latter by a row of machine-stitches b at each end,which stitches pass through the backing also. Glue is applied on the under side of the pad at the front edge, and this glued front-edge part is then turned over on a suitable machine to form plied as described is much cheaper than making it in -bag form into whichthe base and filling are subsequently placed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a stair-pad,
composed of a base, a fabric stitched along l its edges to the base on the under side thereof, along a longitudinal line extending from one end ofV the base to the other, the fabric extending from said line of stitching over the front and rear'edges of the base and over the upper surface of the base, whereby the inceting edges of the covering are secured to the under side of the base along said longitudinal row of stitching, a soft filling between the top ofy the base and the upper layer of covering fabric, and a transverse row of stitching through the upper and lower layers of covering fabric, and through the base along each end edge of the base,substantially as set forth.
Signed at Walpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, this 14th day of June,.A. D. 1901.
HERBERT H. SANDERSON.
