G. E. RAYMOND & GrE. RAYMOND wimeooao UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE EDWARD RAYMOND AND GEORGE EDWARD RAYMOND, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BARREL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,227, dated November 1, 1892.
Application filed November 23, 1891. Serial No. 412.891. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE EDWARD RAY- MOND and GEORGE EDWARD RAYMOND, J r., citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to barrel-covers in which one portion of a detachable co er is hinged by a hinge provided with a spring by which the independent parts of the cover may be raised and restored automatically, the object being to provide a barrel-cover that may be attached to any barrel or box that will allow of the ready and easy removal of the contents when necessary, but that will prevent picking and stealing. e attain this object by means of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the barrel in section and the cover raised. Fig. 2 is a top view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a View of a part of the cover, showing a means of covering the spring-hinge. Fig. 4 is a side View of the cover as attached to a barrel. Fig. 5 is a top view of the cover with the hinge on the side.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
To a rod B we attach by suitable means two halves or portions A A of the cover, which are made of woven wire or any other desired material. The portions A and A are hinged to the central rod B and provided with a spring F, attached at the point of union of the different sections for the purpose of auto matically returning the section that is raised. The portions are made of wood if deemed necessary. The side, which is made movable, is provided with a button or knob 2. To the central rod B and at convenient points upon the frame or edge of the fixed portion of the cover are made the earsO and 0 extending downward, and these ears 0 andO' are provided with thumb-screw E, by which the cover is attached to the barrel D. About the central rod B is wound a spiral or other spring F, as the case may be, as a flat spring may also be used, or any other form that will suit the purpose. In cases reqniringita metal or other suitable strip B is secured over the spring-hinge F. The thumb-screwsE n1ay,if convenient, be placed on the inner side of the barrel in the ear 0 instead of C, as shown in the drawings. At convenient pointsaswinging prop G is secured to the edge of the movable cover A, with a fork at the lower end, if desired, to support the cover A when it is raised in filling the barrel.
Having described the parts of our invention, we now proceed to explain the method of operating the same.
The various parts are secured together in such way that the ears 0 and 0 shall extend into and embrace the edges of abarrel or other receptacle, and the cover is secured by turning the thumb-screws E so as to fasten the ears to the side of the barrel. The spring attached to the central rod B holds the portion A of the cover more or less firmly against the top of the barrel and allows of being raised by the knob 2 to remove the contents when desired. The strip B serves as a cover or pro tection to the hinge-spring F when necessary.
We are aware that barrel-covers are not in the broad sense new, and we do not claim a barrel-cover in the wide application of that word; but
What we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a barrel or box cover, a movable portion provided with a suitable prop and a fixed portion secured to a barrel or box by means of clamps, and a barrel or box, combined with a spring-hinge for operating the movable portion of the lid and a strip of metal or wood secured over the said spring to protect the same, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
GEORGE EDWARD RAYMOND. GEO. EDWARD RAYMOND, JR. In presence of H. HAUPT, J r., Z. T. FISHER, J r., A. CLEMENTS.
