C. OLLENDORFF. CLOSURE POR BOTTLES.
No. 485,052. y Patented Oct. 25,1892.
.7112.: iornbyi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL OLLENDORFF, OF BONN, GERMANY.
CLOSU RE FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,052, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed January 20, 1892. Serial No. 418,735. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARL OLLENDOREF, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Bonn, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Closing for Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is a caoutchouc cap adapted to be pulled over the mouth of ordinary bottles, the rims of which need not be ground off, and allowing the contents of the bottle to be sterilized, while at the same time it aiords an exterior sign to show Whether the Y vacuum produced by sterilizing is still 0btaining.
In the annexed drawings, Figures l and 2 are vertical sections of a part of a bottle provided With the device. Fig. 3 is the plan of the cap.
The cover of the cap consists of two halves of different thickness-wiz., a thick half a and a thin half b. At the place of joining of the two halves a and b a dat vent c projects outwardly, which is provided with a longitudinal slit d. After the cap has been pulled over the mouth of the bottle with the respective article filled in, the bottle is heated, whereby the expanded air is driven out through the slit d. When the heating is discontinued the cover ofthe cap is drawn inward, owing to the overpressure of the atmosphere, the thin half b of the cap being, however, pressed in to a greater extent than the thick halt` a, so that the vente assumes an inclined position, Fig. 2. Thereby the slit d is securely closed. As long as the vent c occupies an inclined position the rarefaction of the air in the bottle obtains. `By slightly compressing the vent c from the sides in the direction of the slit d, air enters through the latter and the cap can be commodiously' pulled 0E the bottle.
What I claim is- A closure for bottles, consisting of a caoutchouc cap constructed to be pulled over the mouth of the bottle, having one half b of its top made thinner than the other half and having a vent c, provided with a slit cl, arranged on the line between the two halves, substantially as described.
CARL OLLENDORFF.
