LAM P-SHADE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,695, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that We, MAX BAUER, a citizen of the German Empire,LOUIs HARRY, asubj ect of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and JOHN BUNGER, a citizen of the United States, all residing at Greenville, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in lamp-shade supporters; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a shade and supporter. Fig. 2 is a section along x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section along 'y y, Fig. l. Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view of a sliding bar.
The shade A, is connected to the bar B by friction-plates C, the bar B being jointed or pivoted to the laterally-compressible elastic friction -plates and being forked, so as to straddle said plates. The bar B slides in the tube D, and said bar is provided with a friction-spring b, one endof said spring projecting through a slot in the tube to prevent the bar from turning, while the other end of the spring exerts friction against the tube D to prevent the bar B from accidentally sliding out of adjustment when the shade, for example, is in such a position as indicated by broken lines in Fig. l.
The tube .D has a bifurcated or forked end d, which straddles the laterally-compressible elastic friction-plates E, and said tube is jointed or pivoted at e to said friction-plates E. The friction-plates E retain the tube D and the lamp-shade in any position to which they may be swung about pivot e. The friction-plates E have one or more stops G to limit the motion of the tube D,or said stops, if desired, may be omitted.
The friction-plates E are secured to the clamp F. By forming the clamp with two portions of different sizes, as seen in Fig. 2, one clamping portion may be used to secure the shade to an electric-light fixture, as seen in full lines in Fig. 1,While the other clamping portion may be used to secure the shade to a gas-bracket, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a clamp provided with a pair of laterally-compressible frictionplates E,a tube D, jointed to and made to straddle said elastic friction-plates, a bar B, slidable in the tube and having a frictionspring b for holding it in its adjusted position, and a shade A, provided with a pair of laterally-compressible elastic friction-plates C, said sliding bar having a forked end jointed to and made to straddle the elastic frictionplates of the shade, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a clamp compris- Y ing two clamping portions of different sizes and provided with friction-plates, of a tube jointed to and made to straddle said plates, a bar provided with a friction-spring and made to slide in said tube, and a shade provided with friction-plates, said bar being jointed to and made to straddle the friction plates of the shade, substantially as described.
- 3. The combination,with a clamp provided with friction-plates having one or more stops, of a tube jointed to and made to straddle said plates, a bai` made to slide in said tube, and a shade provided with friction-plates, said bar being jointed to and made to straddle the friction-plates of the shade, substantially as described.
