SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,446, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY NIKIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin a Combined Walking- Stick and Flag; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. I

This invention has relation to combined walking-sticks and flags for the use of societies, &c., in parades; and itconsists in thenovel construction thereof, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved device with the flag elevated, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same as it appears for use as a walking-stick.

1 designates a tube of suitable length, having a closed lower end,which latter forms the point of a cane or a walking-stick. Formed at the upper end of this tube 1 and integral therewith is a tube 2, which is of considerably-greater diameter, both external and internal, than said tube 1, and between the upper end of said tube 1 and the lower end of said tube 2 and joining the same is the portion 1, the internal diameter of which is the same as that of said tube 1, the external diameter at its upper end the same as that of said tube 2, and its top providing a shoulder 1 at the lower end of said tube 2. A thumbscrew 6 passes through this portion 1 3 designates a light rod, the upper end of which is provided with the handle 4. This rod 3 is of the same diameter as the internal diameter of the tube 1 and is of such length that when in its lower position it will rest at its bottom on the closed lower end of the tube 1 and its head portion 4 in contact with the top of the tube 2. Attached to the rod beneath the handle 4 is a flag 7, and loosely encircling said rod above and beneath said flag are two cups 8.

In operation, if it is desired to employ the device as a flag the thumb-screw 6 is released, the rod 3 withdrawn until the flag 7 and cups 8 are clear of the large tube 2, and the thumbscrew tightened to hold the rod, and consequently the flag, in its uppermost position. The cups are then removed from the ends of the rolled flag and the latter unwound, as seen in Fig. 1.

If it is desired to use the device forawalking-stick, the flag is rolled about the rod 3, the

thumb-screw released, and the flag and rod moved inward untilthehead 4isin contact with the top of the upper tube 2, at which time the lower cup 8 will be in contact with the part 1 and the lower end of the rod in contact with the lower end of the tube 1. It will be readily seen that as the internal diameter of the tube 1 is substantially the same as the rod 3 the latter will be guided in its movements and wabbling thereof thereby prevented. It will be further seen that by making the upper tube 2 of greater internal and external diameter than the tube 1 and locating their point of juncture at the part 1, the opening through which is of the same diameter as that of the tube 1, a seat is provided at the lower end of the tube 2 for the lower cup 8 and a thickened portion provided for the thumb-screw 6, the advantages of which will be apparent. The cups 8 are also an impor tant and advantageous feature of my invention, as they prevent accidental unrolling or loosening of the flag when rolled around the stick, and the lower one, as stated, serves, in connection with the part 1 the additional function of an additional support for the rod.

Having now described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
