dliormy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEROY'S. PFOUTS AND LORENZO D. BALL, OF CANTON, OHIO.
SOLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,580, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed January 22, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LEROY S. PFOUTs and LORENZO D. BALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soles for Boots or Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing our improved sole placed upon a boot or shoe, also illustrat ing a heel-plate. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the sole. Fig. 3 is a view showing a part of the sole, also illustrating the sections disjointed.
The present invention has relation to soles for boots or shoes; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the sole proper, which is formed of such a size that it will properly cover the bottom of a boot or shoe, it being understood that various sizes are to be constructed to properly fit various sizes of boots or shoes.
The sole proper is formed in sections, and, as shown, three sections a are provided; but it will be understood that a greater or less number of sections may be used, if desired. The center section is provided with the apertures B, which apertures are located along the edges of said center section. Upon the edges of the center section are located the bars 17, which bars are preferably formed integral with the center section of the sole. The outer sections of the sole proper are provided with the hooked extensions O, which hooked extensions are received into the apertures B, said hooked extensions embracing the bars b, thereby securely hinging the sections of the sole proper together after the sole has been properly attached to the bottom of the shoe, which may be done by screws or nails, it being immaterial how the sole is attached to the bottom of the shoe.
For the purpose of bringing the different Serial No. 418,922. (No model.)
sections of the sole proper in the same plane, the bars I) are formed upon the bottom or under side of the sole proper, and the shank portion of the hooked extensions 0 fit into the apertures B.
For the purpose of providing a hinged connection between the edges of the sections of the sole which are joined together the top or upper portions of said edges are beveled, as shown at X, Fig. 2.
For the purpose of providing or forming a sole that will have a rough face upon its bottom or under side the lugs D are provided, which lugs are preferably formed integral with the sections. In the drawings the lugs are shown square; but it will be understood that any other desired form will accomplish the same object.
For the purpose of forming a sole that will be light the apertures d are formed, which apertures extend through the sections.
For the purpose of providing a metal sole for boots or shoes that will be light we form the sections of aluminum, which metal embodies the necessary strength and wear requisite for a boot or shoe sole.
It will be understood that by forming the boot or shoe sole proper in sections and hinging the sections together the sole will be yielding, or, in other words, said sole will give to the movements imparted to the boot or shoe in walking.
The heel-plate E may be formed as shown and is preferably made of aluminum.
It will be understood that the sole proper may be formed without providing the apertures d, as said apertures are simply formed for the purpose of lightening the sole. It will also be understood that any desired alloy may be used with the aluminum.
By providing the hooked extension O and so arranging said extensions that they will embrace the bars I) the sections forming the sole proper can be quickly and easily detached and attached, and at the same time provide a hinge that is not liable to become disjointed from wear.
The bars Z) are located below the bottom or under edge of the face of the sole proper,
which arrangement permits the hooked extensions O to be formed of the same thickness as the thickness of the sections proper, therecesses B, having the depressed bars I), and the hooked extensions 0, arranged to interlock, substantially as described. 15
In testimony that We claim the above We have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two Witnesses.
