SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,174, dated September 27, 1892. Application filed February 12, 1892. Serial No. 421,245. (No m'udel.)

Be it known that I, WASHINGTON L. SCO- VILLE, of Manlius, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oane and Orutch Tips, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the class of cane and crutch tips which are provided with a spike or prod adapted to be projected from the tip when required to obtain a secure hold on ice, and also adapted to be retracted to avoid injury to the carpet or iioor when the cane or crutch is used indoors.

The object of my present invention is to provide a cane or crutch tip with a spike or prod which shall be capable of being more positively adjusted to its desired position and more securely retained in its adjusted position; and to that end the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and specitcally set forth in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, Figure lis a side view of the end portion of a cane provided with my improved tip. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionof the same, and Fig 3 is a transverse section on line x :t in Fig. 2.

a represents a metallic ferrule, which is firmly secured to the end of a cane or crutch C and is formed with a downwardly-extend ing stud a' and an external shoulder a between them. Said stud is of cylindrical shape, and the main portion thereof from the shoulder d down is smooth and the lower end portion is screw-threaded, as shown at ct" gitudinally through the center of the stud a and into the ferrule a. extends a straight and smooth channel h, and in one side of the stud a' is a straight longitudinal slot c, which extends from the channel b to the exterior of the stud. Through the channel b extends the spike or prod d, which is formed with a lug Lony d', projecting from the side thereof and through the slot c and screw-threaded on its exterior, which protrudes through the side of the stud a. On the lsmooth main portion of the said stud is mounted the nutorinternallyscrew-threaded sleeve e, which engages the screw-threaded face of the lug d and is coniined from sliding longitudinally by means of the shoulder a" and the jam-nut n, connected to the screw-threaded end portion c!" of the stud a', which shoulder and jam-nut abut against opposite ends of the nut or sleeve c. The jam-nut fn, is formed with a downwardlyextending cap n', the center of which is perorated and receives through it the lower end of the prod d, which is thereby braced. To the exterior of the cap 'n' is fastened in any suitable manner the rubber cushion f, which is also perforated to allow the prod'd to be projected through it. By turning the sleeve or nut e the engagement thereof with the lug d causes the prod to be moved longitudinally, and thus by turning the sleeve e in one direction said prod can be made to project from the end of the wcane or crutch, as shown, and

by turning said sleeve in the opposite direction the prod can be retracted, so as to prevent its protrusion and allow the rubber cushion f to he used for the bearing of the cane or crutch. By screwing the jam-nut In tightly against the sleeve e the same is securely retained in its adjusted position.

What l claim as my invention is- The combination, with a cane or crutch, of the ferrule a, formed with the stud 1f/,shoulder a, channel h, and slot c, the prod d, provided With the lug d', the nut c, engagingsaid lug, and the jam-nut n on the end of the stud, as set forth and shown.
