Description

(No ModeL GILBERT,
GAME COUNTER.
No. 482,961. Patented Sept. 20, 1892.
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK A. GILBERT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAME-COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,961, dated September 20, 1892.
A lication filed July 5, 1892. Serial No. 438,931. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. GILBERT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Gan1e-Oounters 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a plan view of my improved device; Fig. 2, a similar view with the rotatable disk thereof removed; Fig. 3, a detached reverse plan view of the rotatable disk, and Fig. 4 a sectional view of the device on the line a b of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to an improvement in game-counters, the object being to produce a simple, durable, compact, convenient, and reliable device.
With these ends in View my invention consists in a game-counter having certain details of construct-ion and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and'pointed out in the claim.
The body A of the device consists of a thick disk of hard rubber, wood, metal, or any desired material having its edge scalloped, as shown, or otherwise adapted by indentations or serrations to be readily engaged and firmly held by the fingers. It is provided upon its upper face with a circular series of numbers, running, as herein shown, from 0 to 13 and regularly spaced. It is constructed with a circular central chamber B, entering it from its said upper face and having a shallow central depression B, which receives an antifriction-washer O. A thin metallic disk D, slightly smaller in diameter than the body A, is placed upon the upper face thereof and is rotatable thereon. This disk is constructed with a circular sight-opening D, located near one of its edges and arranged to successively expose the numbers before mentioned on the body A, all of the said numbers, except the one exposed through the sight-opening, being concealed normally by the disk. The said plate D is also constructed with an operatingfinger D offsetting from its periphery at a point opposite the opening D and carrying a pin D which extends parallel with the scalloped edge of the body. The said plate is also constructed with a locking-wheel E, having a regularly-indented periphery fixed to its inner face by pins 6 e and entering the chamber B, in which it is engaged by a locking-spring F, projecting centrally into the said chamber, the wall whereof is radially slitted, as at f, to receive it. A screw G, passing centrally through the plate D and the wheel E, also passes through the washer O and into the body A and holds the said plate and wheel in place. The wheel rests upon the washer, which reduces the friction of its operation. The outer end of the screw is shouldered, as at G, to form a bearing for the wheel to turn upon, while the outer face of the plate is countersunk to receive the head of the screw. The wheel is constructed and arranged with reference to the perforation in the plate and to the numbers on the body, so that when the spring has entered one of its indentations the opening in the plate will be registered with one of the numbers on the body.
It will be understood that when the device is lying upon a card-table it may be readily steadied thereupon by lightly engaging it with the thumb and one finger, while its plate may be shifted in position by another finger of the same hand, the locking spring causing the same to jump from place to place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to securebyLetters Patent, is--= In agame-counter, the combination, with a disk-shaped body having its edges scalloped or otherwise roughened and constructed with a central chamber entering it from its upper face, which is encircled by a series of numbers, of a centrally-perforated rotatable disk having bearing upon the said face of the body, and constructed with a sight-opening in its edge to bring the said numbers into View and provided with an operating-finger offsetting from its edge, a locking-wheel having a regularly-indented periphery fixed t0 the inner face of the said disk and entering the said chamber in the body, a spring at- In testimony whereof I have signed this tached to the body and located in the said specification in the presence of two subscribchamber and arranged to be engaged with the ing Witnesses.
said Wheel to lock the disk in place, and a FREDERICK A. GILBERT. 5 screw passing through the disk and wheel into Witnesses:
the body for coupling the parts together, sub- CHARLES A. SNOW,
stantially as set forth. E. J. DANIELS.
