EPHRAIM T. RUGG, OF ALEXANDRIA, OHIO.
ROPE-HOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,756, dated September 20, 18 92.
Application filed June 30,1891. Serial No. 398,070. (No model.)
To all whom it may-concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHBAIM T. Rose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Rope- I'Iold, of which the followingis a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in rope holders and ties.
The object of the present invention is to enable an end of a rope to be readily attached to the body of the same to form a loop and to be readily adjusted to vary the size of the loop.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a holder or tie constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a rope. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the tie or holder detached.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a tie or rope-holder adapted to be employed in hitching ropes, halters, and the like to secure one end of a rope to the body thereof to form a loop, and consisting of a metal plate which is approximately in the shape of a trefoil and is provided with eyes 3 and 4, adapted to receive a rope. The plate is bent in three directions to arrange the central eye slightly at an oblique angle to the left of a true vertical line, the eye to the right of said central eye being at a slight upward obliquity from the lower part of said central eye, and the eye to the left of said central eye being at a slight upward oblique angle from the top of the central eye, and said right and left eyes being in different planes and located nearer to each other on one side of the central eye than on the other. The body 5 of a rope is arranged longitudinally of the plate, on the outer face of the same, and extends through the perforations or eyes at, and the end 6 to be tied passes through the eyes 3 from the inner face of the plate, resting in the bent portion of the plate, and extends at right angles to the body portion of the rope and is interposed between the same and the plate, and thus is securely clamped. By this arrangement a rope may be securely tied, the strain is equally distributed, the parts are not worn at the points of contact with the plate, and the rope may be readily loosened to Vary the size of the loop. The outer portion of each of the eyes is rounded to provide for an easy insertion and bearing of the different portions of the rope; but the inner face of each of the eyes is fiat and forms a binding angular edge around the opening of each eye. The plate enables a rope to make a half-hitch, and is thereby held at any desired adjustment by frictional contact only, which is of great advantage.
What I claim is- A rope-holder for forming a loop by frictionally clamping an end of a rope to the body of the same, consisting of a plate With three eyes integrally connected, the central eye being slightly oblique to the left of a true vertical line, the right eye extending slightly above a horizontal plane at an angle from the lower portion of said central eye, and the left eye being obliquely arranged to the upper part of said central eye, all of said eyes being in different planes and the two end eyes arranged nearer to each other on one side of the central eye than on the other side of said latter eye, the two end eyes being adapted to receive the body of the rope and the central eye the end of said rope, which is interposed between the body of the rope passing through said end eyes and the plate, whereby a halfhitch of the rope is made, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affiXed my signature in presence of witnesses.
EPIIRAIM T. RUGG.
