Description
lnted @Quatre stent @twine Letters Patent No. 101,662, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HITCHING-POSTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, Jol-1N S. Rennen, of Lancaster, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements for Hitching Horses, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of my invention is to provide a lneaus p to hitch horses to a post or place with perfect ease and security, without tying or knotting, so that you simply throw the rein, strap, or line, be it broad, narrow, or round, across the ianged ledge of the device, and allow a pair ofswinging clamps to drop in place by their own gravity, which will secure suchliue, rein, or strap, no matter how hard it is drawn upon or in what direction the force is applied.
The accompanying drawings clearly show the construction and application thereof, in which- Figure l is a front view of the plate 1 and swinging clamps D C, when said clamps are suspended vertically.
Figure 2, a perspective view of the plate P, the clamps D C spread apart to introduce the rein, strap, or line on the cross-bed G, with its rounded portion F and raised flange f.
Figure 3, a side view of said plate l?, with the clamps C D removed, to show the pipe or sleeve p, forming the pivot for the clamps, which pivot or pipe is perforated for a headed screw-bolt, A, with its washer w and bur B, to secure the same.
Figure 4 showslthe parts detached.
Figure 5, the application to a post.v
These several parts combined constitute my hitching device.A The central concavities on the inner and outer edges of the clamps marked E are to receive the thumb and finger, to spread the clamps apart, which can be performed without removing the. glove on the hand in cold weather, and any part of the rein, line, or bitching-strap simply laid into the flanged bed or open groove formed by bottom G and ange f, and releasing the clamps, when they will drop ou the line or rein and clamp the same, whether removed from the head of the horse or not.
In order to adapt it for a wide rein, the bed is of the required breadth, and to grip and hold a narrower rein or strap, the slightly-roululed bases ofthe clamps C Dare provided with teeth, and centrally, also, hollowed out, to adapt the same for a rounded rein or line. In either case the clamping will securely hold whatever is placed uider it, without injury to the lea-ther, and, when dra vu upm from either side, will grip in proportion to the strain brought upon the strap, rein, or line so clamped.
I an1 not aware that anythingr substantially so combined was ever used for hitching purposes, and I believe it to be a highly desirable and useful device for the purpose, and one that would supply a want long felt.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
r1`he arrangement of the iianged bed-plate B, firmly secured to a vertical plate, I), in combination with two swinging clamps, C D, grooved and notched, so as to adapt them for holding a rein or line. in the lnauncr and for the purpose specified.
