Be it known that we, ALFRED L. BARON and BENJAMIN F. CocKAYNE, of Tiffin, county of Seneca, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of our invention is to produce an improved device for retaining the globes or chimneys of lanterns in place, whereby globes of different lengths may be used in the same lantern without danger of their accidental displacement.

Our invention also relates to improvements in latches for holding the globein place; and it consists in an improved form of latch, whereby its security is materially increased.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our lantern, showing the globe in place as in use. Fig. 2 is a central vertz'cil section of the upper part of the lantern with the side tubes removed, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cap-piece detached.

Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the base of a lantern of any ordinary and suitable construction, and 2 its tubes or side supports, also of ordinary construction.

3 indicates a globe that in position is seated upon a perforated base-plate 4, which sur- :rounds the burner 5 and holds the cap thereof in place. The base-plate is preferably carried upon springs, so as to tend to move toward the top of the lantern and press against the bottom of the globe when in place. For this purpose arms 6, pivoted in the sides of the tubes and actuated by springs 7, are preferably employed. From the junction of the tubes above the burner a single tube 8 eX- tends toward the burner, as usual. It is surrounded by an open-sided sleeve 9, which moves freely up and down the tube 8 and which carries on its lower end a cap-piece 10. The sleeve is provided with a spring-latch 11, which consists of a leaf-spring fastened at one end to the sleeve, preferably at its top. Extending downwardly, it passes through an opening 12 in the side of the sleeve, forming a catch 13, and extending outwardly through another opening 14 it forms athumb-piece or handle 15 for operating the latch. The strip 10 between the openings 12 and 14 constitutes a guard for holding the spring in place.

16 indicates a notch in the upper part of the tube 8, which the catch 13 enters, and whereby the sleeve is held securely in place.

Upon the bottom of the cap are secured separate equal spring-loops 17, which are preferably made of wire and preferably partially folded under the bottom edge of the cap and extend obliquely in opposite directions, crossing each other on each side, preferably opposite to the tubes of the lanterns, as illustrated. By this arrangement a practically continuous circle of wire surrounds the upper end of the globe, and the loops press with equal force upon the globe to hold it in place.

What we claim is- 1. In a lantern, the combination, with its cap and suitable supporting parts, of a globeholder consisting of two separate equal springloops fastened to the lower end of the cap and extending obliquely in opposite directions, so as to act with equalresiliency against the top of the globe and hold it in place, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a lantern, the combination, with a tube and supporting parts, of an open-sided sleeve thereon adapted to carry a cap-piece, and a spring secured to the sleeve and passing around a guard formed between the openings 12 and`14 to form a catch, and a notch in the tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
