Description

(Nomodel.)
F. T. WILLIAMS.
I ARGAND LAMP. A Y Y i No. 499,273. Patented June 13.1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK THEODORE IVILLIAMS, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EDWARD MILLER & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ARGAN D LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,273, dated .Tune 13, 1893.
Application tiledV March 6, 1 893.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK THEODORE WIL- LIAMs, acitizen of theUnited States, residing at Meriden', New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improve- -ment in Argand Lamps, of which the following resent so much of an Argand lamp as is necessary to exhibit my invention partly broken away to discover the interior mechanism, Figure l shows the device inits closed, and Fig. 2 in its operative or raised position.
The same letters refer to like parts in both views.
Adesignates a lamp fount; a, a collar on the fount A; B, an inner, C, an outer Wick tube; c, a Iiange on the tube C; D, a foraminous skirt provided with a horizontal flange d through which are pierced apertures d; E, a chimney gallery; F, a chimney holding spring; G, a post; g, a notch in the post G; H, a sleeve or guide.
In the example of my invention illustrated in the drawings, the fount A, collar a, inner tube B, outer tube C and flange c may be of usual or convenient form. As shown the iange c fits within the collar a and is secured by the ordinary bayonet joint. The foraminous skirt D is formed at its lower edge with an imperforate cylindrical portion adapted to fit within the iiangecand to be secured therein. Through the horizontal iange d of the skirt D are pierced apertures d', the function of which will hereinafter appear. The chimney gallery E is adapted to rest upon the ange d of the skirt D. It is provided with the ordinary chimney holding springs F. To the gallery E are attached posts G which passing downward through the apertures d are secured at their lower ends to the sleeve H. This sleeve or guide His of an interior diameter corresponding to the exterior diameter of the tube C so as to slide freely thereon. In
Serin No. 464.716. N0 model.)
each of the posts G and relatively near its lower end is cut at one side a notch g. The upper edge of the notch gis iiat and adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the flange d when the gallery E is raised and slightly rotated in a horizontal direction. A
The operation of mydevice will be readily understood from an inspection of the drawings. The outer tubeC being locked into position on the fount A the skirt D is secured in place, the sleeve H being passed over the tube C. The lamp chimney and if desired ashade holder may be placed in positionl on the chimney gallery E. When it is desired to light the lamp the gallery with its supported chimney is raised vertically by the operator until the upper edges of the notches g are just above the horizontal ange or deck d of the skirt D. The gallery E is then given a very slight rotation so as to engage the notches g with the flange d where it will be securely supported. Afterlighting the lamp, by slightly rotating the gallery E it may be lowered into place. It is clear that the gallery E is guided in its rotation both by the guide H moving on the tube C and by the posts G passing through the apertures d.
I have shown the posts G as integral with the chimney holding springs F, but this, while often advantageous is plainly non-essential to my invention. Itis also clear that other mechanical alterations maybe made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. In an Argand lamp in combination, an outer wick tube, a foraminous skirt surrounding said tube, a guide on said tube, a chimney gallery and a plurality of posts secured at their lower ends to said guide and at a point Ynearer their upper ends to said chimney gal-` lery each of said posts being provided with a IOO skirt, a guide on said tube, a chimney gallery and a plurality of posts secured at their lower ends to said guide and ata point nearer their upper ends to said chimney gallery each of said posts passing through one of said apertures and being provided with a lateral opening or notch adapted to engage with said skirt to retain said gallery in its raised position, substantially as described.
3. In an Argand lamp in combination an outer Wick tube, a foraminous skirt surrounding Said tube, a guide on said tube, a chimney gallery, a plurality of posts secured at their lower ends to saidY guide and at a point nearer their upper ends to said chimney gallery each 15 of said posts being provided with a lateral opening or notch adapted to engage with said foraminons skirt to retain said chimney gallery in its raised position and a plurality of chimney holding springs said springs being zo integral with said posts, substantially as described.
FRANK THEODORE WILLIAMS.
