S. H. GARWOOD DARNING-LAST.
No. 482,351. Patented Sept. 13, 1892.
5'. H Garwood cc., mom-mum, wAsHmm'oN o c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH HELEN GARWOOD, OF SOUTI-ISEA, ENGLAND.
DARNlNG-LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,351, dated September 13, 1892.
Application filed January 11, 1892. Serial No. 417,714. (No model.) Patented in England June 23, 1890, No. 9,713.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH HELEN GAR- WOOD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No. 5 Taswell Road, Southsea, county of Hants, England, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Darning, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 9,713, dated June 23, 1890,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is-to provide improved means for darning stockings and other articles of clothing and for like purposes, and in carrying out such invention I provide a suitable block on which to fix the article or material to be darned, which I shall hereinafter call the work holder. This block is mounted upon an arm or upright capable of being attached to a table or the like, and has mounted upon it rows of pins over which the Work is stretched while being darned. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the work-holder, and Fig. 2 is a detail view thereof in section The work-holder may be of any desirable shape or size and is in Fig. 1 shown as a metal plate A, mounted on an arm or upright B, which is secured to a table by the clamp and screw 0. Round the sides of the plate Aare pivoted bars N, capable of partially revolving, but kept normally in position by springs O, on which bars I mount pins D, over which the work to be darned is stretched or placed,
and when this. is in position and the bars carrying the pins are turned so that the pins point downwardly, being kept in such posi tion by the springs O, the operation of darning may be effected in any desired manner.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. A darning-last consisting of a plate recessed upon each of its edges and partiallyrotatable bars mounted in said recesses upon all sides of the last for independent movement and carrying a plurality of pins, substantially as set forth.
2. A darning-last consisting of a plate recessed upon each of its edges with means of support, partially-rotatable bars mounted in said recesses and carrying pins, and springs in said recesses acting upon said bars to hold them in their normal position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said SARAH HELEN GARWOOD, have hereunto subscribed my signature, in presence of two Witnesses, this 22d day of December, A. D. 1891.
' SARAH HELEN GARWOOD.
