SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,298, dated September 6, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. COLBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Writing-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel writing-pen which is non-corrosible and unaffected by moisture and will contain considerable ink for supplying the split nib, while it possesses all the desired properties of quill pens as regards flexibility and susceptibility of being cut off or trimmed to the conditions desired, but will not dry and split like a quill pen when not in use.
To accomplish this object, my invention consists of a pyroxiline pen comprising a tube of pyralin or other pyroxiline compound extended at one end into a split nib.
The invention is illustrated by the accompan ying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of the improved pen.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawing, wherein The numeral 1 indicates the penbody, composed of a seamless cylindrical tube of pyralin or other pyroxiline compound formed at one end with the split nib 2. The tube is produced in any suitable manner, and the split nib may be cut or trimmed into the shape or form desired to produce a sharp point or a more or less blunt point.
In the use of the pen for writing purposes the tube receives and holds a quantity of ink when dipped thereinto, and thus the tube carries a quantity of the writing fluid which will supply the nib for a considerable time.
The pom-composed of pyralin or other pyroxiline compounds, is non-corrosive. It will not be injuriously affected by moisture, and it will not dry and split when not in use like a quill pen, while it possesses all the desirable properties of a quill pen as regards flexibility and susceptibility of being cut or trimmed into the condition desired by the user. The tubular part of the pen is adapted to be detachably fitted upon any suitable penholder in such manner as to be removable and replaceable at will.
The improved pen is more desirable than a quill pen, in that it will not dry and split when not in use, while it is preferable to a metallic pen, in that it will not corrode or oxidize and is not injuriously afiected by moisture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a non-corrosive writing-pen composed of py ralin or other pyroxiline compound which is unaffected by moisture and adapted to be out or trimmed, substantially as described.
2. A non-corrosive writing-pen composed of a tube of pyralin or other pyroxiline compound extended at one end into a split nib, substantially as described.
