Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed February 3, 1905. Serial No. 244,041.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pens; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to writing implements, and has for its object the production of an improved pen which, while capable of general utilization, is more especially designed for manifolding purposes, the pen-point being to this end inflexible, whereby in writing sufficient pressure may be applied to obtain a number of distinct carbon copies of the original or first sheet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pen of simple and durable construction having provision for receiving and feeding to the point a sufiicient quantity of writing fluid to enable the writing of considerable matter without the necessity of replenishing the inksupply at frequent intervals, and in this connection it is to be understood that the device may also be employed in connection with a reservoir, or, in other words, the improvement may be embodied in pens either of the dip or the fountain types.
In the drawings and following detailed description I have set forth a dip-pen embodying the improvement; but it is to be borne in mind that such specific illustration is not to be regarded as a limitation, as the construction and application may be variously modified without exceeding the scope of the invention as defined by the concluding claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a pen embodying my invention. an end view of the same.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the pen, and 2 is the holder. The pen in its preferred form has a body of screw form, presenting a spiral groove 3, which receives and through which is fed to the pointet the writing fluid, the feed being assisted by longitudinal grooves 55, crossing the spiral groove. The pen, which is made of metal or other suitable material or composition, is preferably integral throughout, although it is within the scope of my invention to form the same in parts. The screw-thread terminates some distance above the tapered point 4:; but the longitudinal grooves 5 preferably extend to or nearly to said point, as shown. The point may be slitted to provide flexibility for general writing; but I prefer that the pen Fig. 2 is when made for manifolding work shall be in flexible for the reason above set forth.
With a slight modification the pen may be provided with a fluid-reservoir which may be similar to that of the ordinary fountain-pen, whereby the fluid is supplied only at lengthy intervals.
I claim as my invention A pen having a cylindrical portion and a tapered portion terminating in a point, an inkretarding thread extending spirally about the cylindrical portion, and longitudinal grooves extending partly along said cylindrical and tapered portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. THOMPSON.
