SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,889, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filed July 3, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY BLA- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleborough, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple lock, the bolt of which may be withdrawn without requiring the key to be turned; and my invention consists in the improved construction of the look, as hereinafter fully set forth.

Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section showing a guard-pin arranged transversely of the guide-tube. Fig. 6 represents a side View of the slotted key for the same. Fig. 7 represents a longitudinal section showing the slotted key inserted into the lock to draw back the sliding bolt. Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section showing a gravitating guard in the guide-tube. Fig. 9 represents the same with the key inserted to draw back the bolt of the look.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the case of the lock; B, the sliding bolt, which is provided with a slot 0, an inclined face 01, and a stem e, upon which is loosely placed the spiral spring 0, which serves to throw the bolt B forward, and when the fiat key D, Fig. 4, is placed into the guide-tube E and forced inward the incline 72 of thekey will strike the inclined face d of the sliding bolt B and force the bolt B back against the resilience of the spring O, the forward end of the key passing through the slot 0 in the bolt, and as soon as the key D is withdrawn from Serial No. 393,401. (No model.)

In order to render it more difficult to pick the look, a guard-pin f, Fig. 5, may be arranged transversely of the guide-tube and an open slot g made in the key to receive the guard-pin, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and in this case the forward movement of the key will serve to force back the bolt B, as before, and two or more guard-pins f may be employed, a corresponding number of slots 9 being made in the key D.
In order to render it still more difficult to pick the look, a gravitating lever F may be loosely placed on the pin f, as shown in Fig. 8, the horizontal position of the said lever upon the insertion of the key D being shown in Fig. 9.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the case provided at one side with a fixed outwardly-projecting key-guiding tube and at the opposite side with a perforation adapted for the passage of the end of the key, of the spring-actuated bolt provided with the inclined face adapted for the action of the end of the key and the transverse pin in the fixed key-guiding tube, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the case provided at one side with the key-guiding tube and at the opposite side with a perforation adapted for the entrance of the end of the key, of the sliding bolt provided with the inclined face adapted for the action of the end of the key, the transverse pin in the key-guiding tube, and the gravitating lever arranged loosely upon the pin, substantially as described.
