SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,015, dated August 16, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, HELEN M. ENOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersburg, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book-Cover Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in devices for protecting and preserving intact the covers of books, which, if not so protected, would be liable, through frequent and continuous usage, to become bruised, marred, and otherwise damaged and injured; and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved book-cover which may be adjusted to different sizes of books and which will completelyprotect both the edges and covers, as well as the sides of the binding-cover, and which can be readily applied and removed.

To the aforesaid object my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described,and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numeralsindicate like parts, Figure 1 represents in perspective a form of my improved book-cover protector, the left half folded to inclose the book-cover, the right half opened and with the lower right corner broken to show its construction. Fig. 2 represents the upper left quarter of a cover unfolded embodying my invention, but slightly differing in construction from that shown in Fig. 1, as hereinafter described; and Fig. 3 is a portion of the left half of a cover embodying my invention, but also slightly differing in construction from that shown in Fig. 1, both Figs. 2 and 3 similarly having parts broken away showing the construction.

Referring to the drawings in their order, in Fig. 1, 1 is the book-cover protector, and consists of an inner plate 2 of pliable material, as tin, brass, or soft iron, covered on each side with a layer 3 3 of paper or other equivalent material.

In use the proteetorl is laid or spread upon any flat surface, as a table, and the back of the book placed on and in its center. The

covers of the book are then alternately opened and laid upon the protector, which is folded over their edges, the corners of the protector being cut diagonally, as shown, to prevent doubling or crimping at the corners, and the protector is retained on the cover by the resistance of its metal lining.

In the modification shown in Fig. 2, which is a preferred construction, the sheet-metal lining 2 does not cover the entire inner surface of the cover, but consists of a band extending about the edges of the protector within and without the lining, on which it folds over the bookcover, and subserves the same purpose as the arrangement in Fig. 1, where the edges and corners of the book-cover are to be protected, and the intermediate portion is not liable to injury.

The modification shown in Fig. 3 does not differ, essentially, from those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, excepting that in the latter the pliable metallic plate is placed in strips about and across the fold-lines, as indicated in dotted and broken lines.

The peculiar feature of my invention is, in addition to the retaining force of the metal lining, that the paper covering on each side of the metal lining is cemented thereto and protects the book-cover from injury from immediate contact with the metal.

I claim as my invention 1. An improved book-cover protector consisting of two plies of fibrous material, as paper, and a lining of flexible sheet metal, said cover being arranged to inclose the book and fold over the edges of the covers, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a book-cover protector, the combination, with a cover of fibrous material adapted to inclose the back and covers of the book, of a reinforcing ply of flexible sheet metal, connected with said cover by cement, and arranged to be bent over and inclose the edges of the book-covers, substantially as shown and described.
