CHECK-BOOK AND WRAPPE Specification of Letters Patent.
n FOR THE s'runs rnnnnor.
Patented Feb. 2., 1915.
Application filed November 22, 1913. Serial No. 802,392.
and a resi- State of Missouri, have invented a new and usefulv Improvement in Check-Books and Wrappers for the Stubs Thereof, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to check books and the like, and has for its principal objects to provide for the re-filling of the permanent cover and for wrapping the stubs after their removal from. the permanent cover.
The invention consists principally in providing stubs with means for temporarily securing the checks in the permanent cover and with the same or a different means adapted to serve as a wrapper for the stubsupon the removal of the body portions of the checks therefrom.
In the accompanyingl forms part of this speci cation, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,-Figure l is a perspective view of a check book embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a pers ective view 0 the pad of stubs removed rom the permanent cover, flap opened out'into the position that it occupies prior removal of the bodies of the checks. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pad of stubs with the wrapping flap serving as a cover therefor. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the wrapping seated in the pocket of thepermanent book cover..
The construction illustrated in the draws comprises a permanent check book cover 1, which has a pocket 2 formed on the inner side of one of its members, this pocket 2 being formed in the usual manner by spacing the linin 3 from the body portion of the cover. he checks are of the usual form consisting of a body member 4 and a stub member 5 separated by a line of perforations 6. Usually, a plurality of checks are printed on a single sheet, with their body ortions separated by lines of perforations These c ecks are bound or fastened toether near the margin of the stubs farthest rom the body of the checks into blocks or pads. .Inthe present construction, the under side of the ad has a strip 8 of material, such as clot secured near said margin and of proper width to serve as a wra er for the stubs, as hereinafter described. is
I, OSCAR E. ScHAErEn,
is inserted between drawing, which 1 to the v strip as adapted. to cooperate wit strip of material is preferably secured to the pad as follows: The marginal portion of the strip is folded or doubled back, and the marginal portion of the block or pad the re-doubled portion 9 (at its bottom) and the extreme marginal portion 10 of the strip, which is folded over the top marginal portion of the pad: and the stub and the strip are then fastened together by means of staples or eyelets 11. The body portion of the cloth strip is then folded underneath the pad in a flat position, in which position it is adapted to enter and cooperate with the pocket 2 provided therefor in the permanent cover and thus constitute a separable means for securing the padin place.
The strip is creased at 12 opposite the line 6 of perforations separating the stubs from the bodies of the checks, and also along another line 13 parallel with said first line of creasing and at a distance therefrom approximately equal to the thickness of the pad. From this last-mentioned crease to the free outer edge 14 of the strip of cloth,
the distance is such that the free marginal portion 15 of said strip can be made to underlap that portion 10 of the strip secured above the pad. In order to far :ilitate the tucking of the free margin 15 under the secured margin 10 and to make a neater cover, it is desirable to cut away the corner portions of the free end of the strip, as indicated at 16 in the drawings.
By the arrangement above set forth, the strip of cloth serves as a permanent wrapper and protector for the stubs after the removal of the bodies of the checks therefrom. In order to make such covers more valuable, it is desirable to provide thereon spaces for the numbers and dates of the initial and final checks, said 5 aces having suitable printed indications 0 their intended use, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus, while the stubs are amply protected by their wrapper, they are susceptible of ready search and accessible to inspection.
While I have .described the wrapping h the pocket in the permanent cover, it is to be noted that this function is a special one and that the pad can be otherwise secured to the permanent cover. For instance, a common form of permanent cover is equipped with studs adapted to enter eyeletsin the pad; and my invention is adapted for use with Thus,
this type of permanent cover by reason of the pad being fastened with such eyelets.
n this'case, it is necessary to perforate the portion of the cloth strip in alinement With the eyelet. The use of the wrapping flap as a securing means is, however, preferable, as it is "less expensive and'as it permits the stubs to be turned back'for use in making indorsements thereon and for other purposes. i
Obviously, my invention is not restricted to use with check books, as it is equally applicable to other books and devices whose use leaves a blockof stubs. Obviously, also, the device admits of variations of detail without departing from the invention. while I have specified cloth as the material for the Wrapper strip, it is obvious that any suitable material may be substituted thereforain fact, that tag board covered with cloth is preferable. It is also obvious that instead of having the free margin of the Wrapper strip tucked into the pocket formed by the secured margin the'reoflsuch free end might be gummed to secure it and guard against unauthorized inspection of the stubs.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pad of sheets comprising stub portions and body portions separable therea from, said stub portions being secured along the margin farthest from the body portions, and a strip adapted to constitute a Wrapper for the stubs when the body portions are removed therefrom, said strip being secured to the stub portion of said pad and being long enough to incase the stub portions after the body portions are separated therefrom.
2. A pad of sheets comprising stub ortions and body portions separable there roln.
and secured together along the margin farthestfrom the body portions, said pad having a pocket on the top thereof, and a wrapper secured on the under side near said margin and having its free end adapted to enter and cooperate with said pocket, said Wrapper'being of proper length to reach around the free ends of said stub portions after removal of the body portions and let its free end enter said pocket. 3. A. pad of sheets comprising stub portions and body portions separable therefrom and secured together along the margin farthest from the body portions, said pad having a Wrapper strip comprising a marginal portion on top" of the pad secured to said padat separated points adjacent to the secured margins of the stub portions whereby the portion between said points forms a pocket on top of said pad, a folded securing portion along the lower secured margin of said pad and a body portion which extends under said folded portion and has its free end adapted to coiiperate with said pocket upon the removal of the body portions of the sheets, said body portion of said wrapper strip being of proper length to extend around the free ends of said stubs and let the end of said wr pper strip entersaid pocket. a
4. The combination with a permanent book cover having a pocket therein of a pad of sheets comprising stub portions and i a strip of tag board or like material inserted in said pocket, said'strip being of sufficient length to'incase the stub portions of said pad, whereby said strip is adapted to serve as a wrapper for the stubs upon their removal from said book cover.
Signed at St. Louis, 'Mo., this 19th day of November, '1913.
