CAN-SOLDERING CLAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 480,559, dated August 9, 1892.

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, ROLLIN CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Soldering Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a device for soldering cans by hand; and my object is to produce a more simple, cheap, and convenient device than those hitherto in use.

Vith this purpose in View my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete invention as used upon an ordinary table; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the base-plate and clamp as applied toa table.

A metallic disk a, provided with a pivot b, is rigidly secured to a rectangular bar of iron c, having a clamping-screw CZ in its lower arm for securing it to the edge of a table e. In order to hold the can a and revolve it freely during the soldering operation, I provide a holding-frame, which consists of a disk f for receiving the bottom of the can, and from the edge of this disk rises a standard g. This standard is provided with a laterally-extend ing arm h, which overhangs the top of the can, and its free end is provided with a screwclamp, which consists of a threaded bolt n, operating within a threaded eye n. The upper end of the bolt is provided with a handle or knob m, and the lower end with a circular disk o, adapted to bear upon the center of the top of the can when the clamp is screwed down tightly.

can is placed in the frame between the disks fand m, as shown in Fig. 1. The clampingbolt n is now screwed down until the can is securely held between the two disks. The operator now picks up the can by taking hold of the handle m with his left hand and places the can with its frame in a certral position upon the pivot l?, and when in this position the can and its frame can be rotated at will. It must be understood that the can is tightly and y immovably clamped in its frame and that when the two are placed upon the pivot b they can only be handled or rotated as one piece. As the can and its frame are rotated by one hand the soldering operation can be performed with the other. By this arrangement it is evident that the can can be handled and the sealing operation performed by holding and rotating the can by its frame Without the operator being compelled to hold the can, which is made extremely hot by its boiling contents.

It is evident that my invention could be varied in many slight Ways that might suggest themselves to skilled mechanics. Therefore I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but consider myself entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a can-soldering device, a can-holder provided with a disk at its lower end and a clamping-screw at its upper end, said disk being provided with a recess in its bottom, in combination With a clamp provided with a pivot adapted to enter said recess, substantially as described.
