WITNESSES: A v INVENTUH Jfi g L WWQM ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TRISTRAM D. BROWN, OF CLIFTON SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
PAIL, PAN, WASH-BOILER, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,555, dated August 9, 1892. Application filed February 27, 1890. Serial No. 342,010. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TRISTRAM D. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Clifton Springs,in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, Pans, Wash-Boilers, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in wash-boilers, pans, pails, 850., having zinc strips to prevent the formation of rust; and its object is to secure said strips to the side of the pan or boiler so that they will not become loosened or deranged by constant usage and at the same time avoid impairing the pan or vessel by cutting the body portion thereof.
The invention consists in a vessel having its sides and ends made full and provided with a continuous-looped groove or recess having a piece of zinc secured therein, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent sectional views of vessels with my improvement secured in their sides.
0 designates the vessel, in the sides and ends of which is a continuous groove or recess, wherein is placed a zinc plate or zinc strip d, which is locked or secured by the parallel edges of the looped or full portion of the metal. This plate or strip is inserted in place prior to the final creasing or pressing, where by the flanges are made to bear down firmly thereon, and thus hold the same as against slipping. In this manner the edges of the said strip are locked by those of the side of the vessel, a double being made thereby. After the parts are thus locked together then joints can be further tightened by the application of solder thereto. WVhile the solder increases the durability of the joints, they do not depend thereon for their security.
The principal advantage of securing the zinc strip to the sides and ends of the vessel instead of to the bottom is that the same is not subjected to the Wear that is caused by sliding a vessel on its bottom over a surface.
The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will be especially observed that by reason thereof the zinc strip is held firmly in place and all cutting of the tin or body portion of the vessel is entirely avoided, thus preserving the full integrity of the article and avoiding all danger of leakage or loosening of the parts by reason of the attachment of a zinc strip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved articleof manufacture, a pan or other vessel having its perpendicular sides provided with a continuous loop or made full and bent to form continuous parallel flanges or creased edges all in one perpendicular piece and an intermediate continuous zinc plate or strip in said groove or recess and having its edges secured bysaid flanged or creased edges, whereby it is held rigid in said groove or recess, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
