SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,401, dated August 9, 1892.

Application filed July 24, 1891 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GAsKILL,

a citizen of the'United States, residing at Canton,in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fences, by means of which a fence is provided being simple in construction, durable, and cheap in first cost.

More particularly myinvention relates to a panel fence so constructed that the several panels may be separated and readily removed or adjusted, as may be desired.

My improvement consists, essentially, of panels so constructed as to overlap at their respective ends to give strength, and of being bolted together at the overlapping point, and of being provided with side stays provided with hooks to engage loop-headed bolts in the upright frame-pieces of the respective panels, and of loop-headed pins designed to bear through perforations in shoes provided at the lower extremities of the stays to fix them in position.

That my invention may be more fully understood reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of two sections of panels adjusted in position. Fig. 2 is a detailed cut sectional view through the line 00 00, showing the manner in which the panels are bolted together. Fig. 3 is a detailed cut sectional view through the lines Z Z, showing the location of the loop-headed bolts in the ends of the panels. Fig. 4 is a detailed View showing the loop-headed bolt and the hook on the side stay designed to engage the same.

In Fig. 1, B B B are the longitudinal framepieces of the panel, and A A A A the perpendicular frame-pieces thereof, with the said perpendicular framepieces provided with pins or spikes, as herein shown, designed to penetrate into the bearing surface or ground.

G G are blocks between the longitudinal frame-pieces of the panel, which, together with the perpendicular frame-pieces A A, bear the loop-headed bolts F. O O are side stays provided with the hooks D E at their upward extremities, which engage in the loop-headed bolts F, and further provided with suitable shoes at their lower extremities, designed to bear upon the ground and pro vided with perforations, through which are carried the loop-headed pins 0 c to fix the said stays securely in position. The special construction of the ends of the respective panels and the adjustment of the bolt designed to secure them together is best seen by reference to Fig. 2, in which H is the bolt de signed to secure the two sections together and bears between the perpendicular framepieces A A. The same may or may not be recessed to accommodate its passage through and bearing and supporting the blocks I I.

The special construction of the respective panels and the means of carrying the loopheaded bolts is best shown in Fig. 3, in which the same are shown bearing through and bolted upon the perpendicular frame-pieces A A and the blocks G G, and with the loop portions extending outwardly and designed for engagement with the hook on the side stay.

In Fig. 1 the panels or sections of the fence are shown with the lower ends of the perpendicular frame-pieces provided with pins designed to penetrate into the bearing surface or ground to prevent the shifting of the lower portions of the panels; but the said pins may or may not be used, as may be desired. The panels are provided with the side supports 0 C, the same being hooked within the loopheaded bolts F, and, bearing laterally and downwardly therefrom, are securely fixed to the bearing surface or ground by means of the loop-headed pin 0. As a means of securing the respective panels together at the points where they are overlapped, the bolt H and the blocks I I are provided,thus providing a sectional or panel fence that maybe adjusted in a line or to form a square to inclose a lot, or, in fact, any form that may be desired, and secured in such position firmly and substantially and capable of as efficient service as a fence as though posts were set and the boards nailed thereto.

The particular features of advantage possessed by my improved fence consist, essentially, in its being constructed in panels each independent of the other and capable of ready adjustment to form a continuous fence, and more particularly in point of strength in the overlapping of the ends of the panels and in its ability to be adjusted, so as to be carried over rises or depressions in the ground, and, further, in there being provided the clamping means orbolt H to secu re the sections together, and the side stays O C, with hooking means and foot provided, which form a complete brace to resist all force brought to bear upon the fence to throw it down. The braces being adjusted oppositely, the force applied upon one side is resisted both by a push and pull or the action and reaction of the said side stays, thus making it practically impossible to overthrow the fence. The pins 0 being provided with the loops accommodate the re ception of a bar or lever for withdrawing the same from the ground, and the hooks D are so constructed that it is practically impossible for the same to become detached from the loops in which they are carried unless the the following elements: the overlapping sections B B, provided with eyebolts F in the perpendicular end pieces, the blocks I I and bolt 11 for connecting the panels, the side braces C 0, having the hooks D E and perforated foot-plates, and the pins 0 for securing the braces to the ground, all substantially as described and shown.
