COMBIN ED POST AND BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,833, dated February 8, 1898.
Application filed October 30, 1897, Serial No. 656,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN B.YOHN, a citizen of the United States,residing at Sailor, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Post and Brace; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fence construction, and more particularly to certain construction and arrangement of parts necessary to provide a combined post and brace and means for anchoring the same in an adjusted position.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined post and brace which is preferably formed of metal, though other suitable material maybe employed, said metal being so shaped that a comparatively small amount of material will be used, although great strength and rigidity of the parts will be provided.
The details of my invention will be fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my post and brace as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the post. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the post, showing one side thereof and also showing the wires andbrace partly in section, as indicated by line 00 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the post alone. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the post and brace,taken on line m Fig. 6 is a front view showing a modified construction of a base-plate, while Fig. 7 is an edge view thereof.
Referring by figures to the several parts of my invention, 1 indicates the post, which consists of the middle or body section, formed, preferably,of heavy sheet metal, and the rightangled flanges or side sections 2 and 3, designed to reinforce the middle section and hold the same in a rigid position, thus making it possible to use but a small amount of material. The post thus formed is to be of sufficient length to accommodate the usual or any preferred number of wires or rails and also to provide a sufficient anchorage for the post when adjusted in the soil.
In order to reinforce the lower portion of the post, if deemed desirable, I provide the plate 4:, which is of sufficient length to reach from the top of the soil to the bottom of the post proper and of suflicient width to extend slightly beyond the body or middle section of the post, thus anchoring the post securely in an adjusted position.
It will of course be understood that the reinforcing-plate 4: is properly secured into engagement with the middle section of the post proper by a series of suitable rivets or bolts 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
At a point slightly above the surface of the ground I connect to the side flange 2 or 3 by a suitable locking bolt or rivet 6 the horizontally-disposed brace-section 7, which is to extend along the line of fence sufficiently to connect with the lower end of the inclined brace 8, such connection being made by the locking-rivet 9, the upper end of the inclined brace being connected near the upper end of the post proper to one of the side flanges 2 or 3 by the rivet or bolt 10, thus producinga triangle the base of which is formed by the post. The apex of the triangle thus formed should be supported by the post or stone 11, which is properly anchored in the soil at this point, thus fitting the improved combined post and brace for being especially adapted for use as a corner-post, though it will be un derstood that it will be found equally reliable and efficient when applied at any point upon the line of fence.
While I have shown the post as used upon the end of a fence, as would be the case upon one side of the gate-opening, it may be readily converted into a corner-post, which will be braced in both directions, taken by the line of fence, by simply duplicating the groundbrace and inclined brace, as previously described, it being apparent that suitable apertures may be readily provided in the main post, at any preferred point thereof, designed to accommodate the locking-rivets for the additional braces.
When my improved combined post and brace is to be used upon the terminal of a line of fence, the ends 12 of a series of wires 13 may be passed through suitable apertures formed in the body or middle section of the post and properly upset or riveted, or said ends may be secured in any suitable manner.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown, respectively, a side and edge view of a modified form of anchoring-plate 4. In the modified construction it will be understood that, the edges of said plate are so cut and bent that a series of lips 14 are provided, one of said lips being bent to one side and the succeeding one bent in the opposite direction, thus increasing the grasp of the soil upon said plate and thereby more securely anchoring the post, to which it is attached in an adjusted position.
The post provided with my improved anchoring-plate is properly anchored and adjusted in the soil to the desired depth, the braces 7 and 8 having previously been secured in position thereon, when the anchoring post or stone 11 is adjusted in such position as to receive the united ends of said braces, thus providing areliable base for said ends, which will prevent them from taking into the soil and thus cause a sagging condition of the fence-wires.
Having thus fully described the advantages, construction, and use of my improved combined post and brace, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improvement in combined fence posts and braces, the herein-described post consisting of the middle section and side flanges; an anchoring-plate secured to the lower end of said post and provided upon its edges with a series of horizontally-disposed lips, in combination with a horizontal and inclined brace properly connected to said post and to each other in the manner specified and for the purpose set forth.
